I doubt any new bolt will look like any of those.

On all my restorations over many years I have put quality above all else. New fasteners for stress points, clean and free of corrosion and free of possible cracks etc.

Always bought high tensile fasteners from Namrick. They are all bright zinc with clear passivation but many fasteners on my 73T were yellow passivation. Chrome 6 is used for that 'yellow' finish and by and large that is outlawed now (it is a toxic heavy metal).

Just my 2 peneth.

I found that the bolts on my car tended to be grouped by make. For instance all larger suspension-orientated bolts are Kamax but the smaller engine-tinware are Verbus but it's not always consistent. I guess that different years may have different makes but then again after so many years of maintenance who can say what is original to the car. Although my car came off the road after only 12 years, that is 12 years of 'mechanics' working on it. Also, Porsche were notorious for using what was at hand in those early years.

I have used all original bolts where possible, replated but used new washers and nuts everywhere.
Amazingly, 90% of bolts cleaned up like new which says something for the quality and corrosion protection. To look at them before cleaning made me think no way - but then the wire-wheel showed it was heavy crud which came off revealing a nice clean polished surface, perfect for plating.

Re-wire ongoing, the guys are looking to replace wiper / headlight / indicator controls, I'm going to the workshop tomorrow to have a look... How rare are these controls?

So am interested to know what colour wiper/ turnsignal stalks people have on their 1968 swb cars.

In the US, there was a switch from chrome to black, it has been suggested that the in Europe, we remained with Chrome, I had chrome on my car, which is model year 68 and looks like it was built mid 67.

What do others have?

Front loom appeared to be long at the front, better long than short so we have doubled back at the point where the fuel send wiring Spurs off main loom.

Looking at the wiring in the engine bay for where wires exit engine bay to the rear light clusters it is clear where the loom exits for drivers (RHD) side not so clear for passenger side can someone have a look in their garage and advise? Drilled holes seem too small?

Slow but steady progress on the rebuild of suspension, have a couple of bits out with specialist for reconditioning of rear spring plates and getting bushes pressed onto front a arms.

Meantime we have stared to tear down the engine...

'S' Engine has come apart ok, but there is a shopping list....

Will be seeking at least one replacement barrell and piston, as installed was from another model and is a different size. Due to slugged up oil lines cam profiles are ruined, piston rings in pieces, barrels scored... rocker arms deformed.

Upside is the bottom end broadly ok....

I guess I'm happy that I'm doing an engine rebuild that needs doing, but wishing that it didn't need this much doing..

Thoughts on where to source parts, or if the 5 remaining barrels can be machines and sleeved appreciated.

So the engine is now is bits and being vapour blasted, will be in the workshop on 6th of Feb so will take some pictures.

Can recommend Newman cams who reground rockers, and repadded those that could not be reground. Ken also manufactured two new S spec cams to replace these:

Good to see Rich. Progress, progress and progress. There are soooooo many parts to a car are there not???!!!
Seems to me it takes an age to do the smallest job but maybe that's just me....

And crank casing all cleaned up too. Just waiting on oil pump to arrive and we will start the engine rebuild.

I am interested to know opinions on what is considered the correct tinware that runs across the back of the engine bay for 1968S
