Renault to France !

Post by impmad2000 »

Well that's the oil checked and the brake rods tweaked slightly. Next step is to trailer to Port Solent for a ferry to France on Wednesday. 5 days touring round with a bunch of other Old Renaults with my mum in the passenger seat. This trip is dedicated to my step father who's car it was, who died last year. I just hope I don't break anything!!Image

1908 Renault AX. 1200cc twin cylinder. 3speed.
It has a roof, but no side protection against the weather. No heater of course.
Thanks for the best wishes, I fully intend to post a few updates as I go.
See us off at Port Solent, Wednesday at 4:30. We"lll leave at about 5:30 for trundle to ferry.

Day 1 - To the ferry
Image
All loaded and ready to roll, trailer to Portsmouth.
We meet at a trailer park and unload. Can you guess what it is yet ?
Image
After my 2nd ever drive of the car we get to Port Solent for a meet before heading for the ferry. Attempt at arty shot ! I must remember to keep my elbow out of the shot!
Image
loading was a breeze, but the ramps up in the car park decks never looked so steep, definitely needed a clear exit and a run up !
Still, the food on board was quite nice

Day 2 - St Malo to Ploermel (78 miles)
Great ! St Malo early morning and I've got to drive a slow old car out of town, up hill ! This is when I discover the problems of a gravity fed carb, a fuel tank under the seat and most critical... Fuel level .
1/2 way up the hill it just dies !! We have only 1 door on the car and pretty poor handbrake so we start to learn the routine...
Mum jumps out and chocks the back wheel. I jump out and get ready to hand crank ( no starter motor here !) fire up the car and jump back in. Slight pull forward to take the weight off the chock..... Slight, cos if you pull too far forward, you run over the chock with the back wheel !
Mum jumps back in and away.... Next set of lights, repeat !
Finally we make it it of St Malo to a per booked breakfast stop 8 miles away ! All very civilised :)
