Steve McQueen 2.2S at Essen

Post by Nick Moss »

I wonder how many people walked past the car without even realising what it was? This is a car that sold at auction for $1.25M, was imported into Germany (19.6% VAT) and has just undergone a 2,500 hour restoration with amazing attention to detail at a cost of over €400K. This puts the total cost at over £1.3M.

Did you notice it? Was it worth it?

It looks amazing but I think if it were mine I'd have left it unrestored :(

Mind you if you are paying £1m for a car you can do whatever the hell you like!

How is it possible to spend €400k on restoring a street 911? From what I know of the car it wasn't missing anything too major so I presume almost all the bill was labour. 400,000 divided by 2,500 = €160 per hour!

The car had been wiped of all history and any link to Steve McQueen. Madness. :? :(

I heard Porsche Classic (the factory) declined to restore it lest the patina be destroyed.
But a specialist stepped forward, only too happy to take the guys money. What a misguided fool the owner is, but hey, it's his car, his money.

We heard that it took ten seats to donate various sections of trim which were then patched together to make an excellent - but 'lived in' - pair.
It was the only part of the car that wasn't brand new. And none of that had ever been sat on by Steve.
Ruined. :( :( :(

First time I've heard of someone building a replica by using the real car as a donor!!

Will be interesting to see how the market reacts to the car next time it comes up for sale.
