Build diary.....72e....Becoming known as Geoff's 72 Hot Rod

Post by Superlight7 »

Sharing my build diary....without much research and in need of a winter project I came across the following.

Now my wife's not normally a fan of 911's but with nothing to do she came along to view the car....we hadn't even got out to look closely before she turned to me and said...." I love it.....just buy it "

Image

So after a few cups of coffee a deal was done and we became the proud owner of a 72e.......

Inspection revealed.....need for sills.....kidney bowls....floors....wings......the list goes on.....but how hard could it all be....and the plus points of errrr.....it had Recaro seats and other original goodies

The moral of the story "beauty is only skin deep"

But then in my mind I'd already figured out if it came to the worse then it could be parted out for a tidy profit.

My wife's enthusiasm extended to starting to strip the car.....and a pleasing point to note is that during the whole project we've only encountered two seized fixings.....one dealt with by heat.....the other unfortunately sheared off......not too bad for a 40 year old car

Image

Finally we found clean metal and started the repairs

Image

And then the roof was found to be really suffering around the sunroof aperture ...... As the car is destined to race and not able to locate another roof panel.....we did away with the sunroof and rolled our own panel....

Tacked in place you can see that we needed to extend in places outside the normal aperture....

And now mounted on the spit

Old fashioned elbow grease to removed underseal

Towards the end of welding i built the dolly to transport to and from paint shop

Looks like a great project - what final spec do you have in mind for the car?

My quick method for rubber bush removal...

30 seconds with gas torch to get things going.....then leave to simmer whilst you have a coffee.....

Image

Then take a screw driver and help the burning bush just fall off.....

Image

Quick sandblast a blow of black powder before installing new bushes.....

Image

After much thought I've gone for Elephant Racing bushes ..... Certainly not the cheapest but wonderfully engineered and no risk of squeaking from poly bushes....
