Any Yorkshire 914 owners about?

Post by johnfm »

Me and a mate are looking to buy a 914 for rallying.

But be are both 6'4" and he is built like a prop forward!

Any 914ers around Leeds, Otley, Skipton or Harrogate who can give us a quick sit in test to see if we fit??

Cheers

Hi John

I'm often up at the mother in laws up in Grassington, but rarely in the 914. There is a guy called John Sutton somewhere up your neck of the woods that has a 914 rallycar (like me). Not sure how you could get hold of him though. I actually live in Mid Wales, but you and your mate are more than welcome to come down here and have a squeeze to see if you fit in mine.

If you're going to go rallying in a 914 you need to bear in mind that you'll have a helmet on too which you'll need to factor in when trying a 914 on for size. Also sitting in a standard 914 may not give you the best idea either. You'll need to sit in one like mine that has FIA seats and a rollcage which also will factor into the equation of whether or not you'll fit.

My thoughts are at 6'4 your co-driver might squeeze in (I've had a co-driver that was 6'2 and one in Ireland this year that was around 6'4) but anyone over 6' would struggle to drive it. Although without sitting you in my car it's difficult to say whether you'd fit with a little fettling to seat position and other bits...

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Though our 'rallying' is mere regularity and test, historic rally style - no helmets or cages...

I think your rallying looks a lot more fun!

I'm 6'4" and I fit into mine ok. I have a standard seat and a std back pad. I have to push the seat back really hard to get it onto the final slot on the adjusters and I have a smaller than std steering wheel. I also drive without a shoe on my right foot! This gives me comfortable room for gear changes. With a shoe driving is possible but not quite so comfortable.
Andrew Mallagh on here is about 6'6". He has an after market bucket seat but has removed the back pad and mounted it as far back as it will go. He has carpet lined the fire wall and it looks very smart.

Hi John,

I've got 1 bucket seat and a steering wheel in my (incomplete) 914 if you want to sit in it and try it for size. The pedals arent in yet but i can always quickly bolt them in if you need to know how they are reach wise.

Cheers

Regularities and night rallies are what I started on. Great fun. I hope your navi' doesn't get car sick  if yes then invest in a travel sickness pill company  he'll be eating them like sweets.

Also, I found that if I took out the passenger foot mount that made out of some kind of foam with some board on the top you navi will have an easier fit (at least for his legs).

Keep us posted whatever happens and let me know if I can help in any way.

The build has been on hold for about a year due to circumstances but I'm back on with it now! Not too far to go really - if I had a couple of clear weeks I could get it done. I'm aiming for it to be ready by summer, but making no promises!

Just saw the two cheap 914s sold on the classified by vwretrosteve.

Gutted to miss one those.

Did they go to someone on here?

The grey one with the old wheels looked a peach.
