Steve McQueen Replica

Post by sng45 »

Taking into account the original Steve McQueen car sold earlier this year for $1,250,000 what are the opinions on this

http://www.leemayorrestorations.com/car ... en-replica

I've got the right first name - if I buy it and change my surname by deed poll it could be heading in the right direction !

I saw it at the NEC yesterday and it looked to have been very well restored, Mike Bainbridge built the engine although until yesterday I'd never heard of Lee Mayor restorations - does anyone have any experience of the company ? and of course opinions on the car !

Steve McQueen Replica

Post by 23e Heure »

Really it would need sugar scoop headlamp rings, some yellow lense fog lamps, a Weltmeister decal on the windscreen, muffler skirt, and Neile Adams looking cuckolded in the passenger seat.
Ticket price may be slightly higher with those options though.

I am going to guess Mike Bainbridge didn't fit the fan belt or the heater hoses.

Kind regards.

Maybe it's supposed to be a replica of Steve McQueen's '69S, now owned by his son, Chad.

Lee is the son of Derek Mayor ,the Autoglym European Concours Champion. What Derek doesn't know about restoring cars to the highest standards is not worth knowing. He had his own Austin Healey 100S on the stand across from Lee. Derek is now a judge for Autoglym and has his own restoration business DM classics.I had a close look at Lee's 911T at the show and its a top quality car and as nice a T as I have seen and I thought his asking price was fair (its as close as you'll get to buying a new 911T) He had a lot of interest and I will be surprised if its not sold.

I think the advert and my title gives some hint that it is in fact a replica of the car Steve McQueen drove in the Le Mans film - perhaps it confused you in the title ! I suppose some may consider the original a "standard" car - maybe the fact it sold at $1,250,000 would deem it ( in some peoples minds) to be "non-standard"

Anyway, interesting reply Jason - hope you're well and selling plenty of watches

Certainly looked to be a very nice car which had been very well restored to a high standard and as you say as close to buying a new 911 as you could get. Thanks for your reply

Steve McQueen Replica

Post by Bertroex »

Well, I think it's a marketing master stroke. I saw the car on the show and the work is "very well" executed: Paintwork is deep and ripple free , interior, details of the Fuchs, Mike Bainbridge's involvement ; anyone's non -suspect wife as well as 95% of the punters would be impressed. That's the first bonus.

Then, the choice of base car was lucky in that it was not too bad AND originally delivered in Slate grey. Matching numbers opening up the avenue to blue chip bs. Second bonus.

Thirdly, Lhd. You have no idea how much French I heard along my walks on Saturday (as well as Irish). It was -sadly- one of the best Porsche's I saw that day. Bit of a missed opportunity for the absolute best of the best Porsche specialist out there but then they don't the NEC show to showcase. Nonetheless, loads of EU visitors took business cards along and that car is keenly priced in comparison to German prices. Third bonus.

Fourthly, The Steve mcQueen connotation. He would turn in his grave seeing how this is being commercially milked with posters, cardigans, photos, gulf memorabilia. Whilst " Steve mc Queen specification" would sound a smidgen cooler than "Replica", it gives the car a massive desirability as it was chosen by the King of Cool. Fourth bonus.

Finally, the price. Loads of dyed in the wool Porsche pundits (Jason) laughing out loud and tutting at totting up 50% profit margins. However, EVERYONE is talking about it. How many surfers have bookmarked the link, you reckon?Atomic bonus.

Who cares about the car? This is about the money and the bubble has not burst. Yet.

Cheers,

Bert

It looks a nice car and a lovely restoration but you have to ask yourself why you would want to buy/own a car like that. I suppose if one is a big McQueen fan it might appeal. There was a big debate on the early S registry on whether the McQueen auction would drag up the value of slate grey 'clones'. Some thought yes, some no. I suppose we will find out with this car.

There is a (mainly) original 69S in a very rare colour for sale in the States with an impeccable pedigree for less money. That would appeal to me more and would surely be a better buy in the long run. Just an opinion. Horses for courses and all that.

All the best with the sale.

Regards
Mike
