1971 2.2T
Hi All,
Just bought my first Porsche. Collecting it in torrential rain was an interesting experience as I needed to keep the windows down to clear some of the oily smoke steaming from the defroster...
Arrived and parked at home somewhat wet
Cheers,

Re: 1971 2.2T
Small update, I've not had much time to work on the car but at least I've managed to change plugs and rotor/cap, it now idles ok too.
I've also overhauled the gear linkage, new coupler and rod bushes together with some welding and cleanup of "gear lever tower" made a world of difference, no more guesswork finding the gears
Bought a 380 mm 914 steering wheel on eBay without doing enough research meant that I had to machine a recess for the turn signal cancelling ring and drill some new holes, was more work than it sounds like and it took the better part of a day, lesson learned
Yesterday I made a very interesting day trip down to Torino to look at the products from Deser. I was only after a set of new Sport S seats but after some discussions we agreed that they'll do the complete interior including recovering the cracked dash. I'm glad to report that they were very flexible to deal with and happy to accept me supplying the leather (my father in law is in the leather buissiness) and the German wool carpet kit that I'm about to order. The plan is to have the interior done in April.
Next up is to remove the heat exchangers for a good cleanup, change the leaking lower valve covers and adjust the valves and change oil/filter. Maybe also have a look at the heat flapper boxes.
I Would also like to change the g.box oil to Swepco 201 but haven't found any supplier in Switzerland yet, only thing I could come up with is to order from the Belgian importer but I'm just too tight to cough up the €65 shipping... Any Swiss DDK:ers who can advice?
Another thing on the to do list is to find out how to order the Kardex here in Switzerland, I've been in to 2 Porsche centres and they had both no idea of what I was on about...
Cheers,

Re: 1971 2.2T
Got some stuff done today,
Valves adjusted, oil and filter changed, also fitted a set of turbo valve covers together with silicone gaskets. Finished off 3 cans of breakclean so will hopefully see if there's any other leaks tomorrow. No more smoking from the left rear wheel well but still a lot of smoke via the defroster, think I'll just run it for a while and see if it burns off before dismantling the heat exchanger.
Also fitted some new rear indicator lenses from JP Dansk but must say that the quality and appearance isn't very promising . I've got a very good set of F & R black rimmed Bosch euro lenses if anyone fancies a swap.

Re: 1971 2.2T
Car's been parked for a week now and not one drop of oil to be seen on the garage floor
Spent yesterday eve removing an old alarm and found a few places were the loom will need to be repaired, was out of shrink tube so will try to sort that tomorrow.
I'll get the dash pad recovered shortly so thought it'd be a good idea to remove the gauges and alu trim and prep for paint, now when that's done I don't know if matte or kind of silk/half matte is the correct finish?

Re: 1971 2.2T
Nice drive on surprisingly dry roads Zurich to Lugano this afternoon, until I stopped for a break that is... Tried to start several times but it refused to fire, confirmed that there was spark and then pulled a fuel hose, ign ON and fuel everywhere... Tried to start again but still dead. Left it to cool down for another half hour and luckily for me it fired up
Cheers,

Re: 1971 2.2T
Have got some work done on the interior recently, some by Deser Seats and some by myself.
Dash in progress
Primed
Even found the original Frankfurter hidden in the bottom of a box with spares that followed with the car, needles to say the nasty eighties Panasonic upgrade got binned accordingly
Radio before
Radio turned out to be in great shape after a bit of cleaning and polishing, still haven't hooked it up so no idea if it's working though.
I know that it's far from perfect but with the alu trims straightened up and some new basket wave vinyl fitted things are looking better. The knee pads and ashtray were recovered in some very original looking original vinyl by Cesare at Deser seats. I should really change the cracked/wrapped dash pad or have a go at recovering it once the front screen is out. Also the the instruments could do with a good clean...
Edit: forgot to mention that I had a 380 mm 914 steering wheel double wrapped in leather by Deser as well. I just machined a recess for the indicator canceling ring to get it to fit.

Re: 1971 2.2T
I changed the carpets last weekend and being a completely novice it took me two full days, cleaning old glue, trial fitting and gluing piece by piece. Have to say that the quality and fit of the carpet was very good so although not the cheapest I can highly recommend the wool carpet from KHM in Germany.
I was also very pleased that I didn't find any rust under the old carpet or sound insulation, only negative finding was that the previous owner have hacked 2 holes for some nasty eighties speakers in the parcel shelf, kind of explains the loud engine sound then... Sorting that have now been added to the to-do-list whilst the windows are out.
Carpet gluing in progress
Finally I got the new carpets glued in and the recovered parcel shelf, side panels and new sport s seats all covered in lovely soft leather installed . Still need to blast and paint the sheet metal pieces that the seat rails are attached to.
My daughter seam to like the car too

Re: 1971 2.2T
The engine was sometimes hesitating and misfiring when driving on bumpy roads so I figured the carbs was was the next thing to look into. They did look rather ok on the outside but as the car had only done 30,000 km's from '88 until I bought the it last spring I decided to take them apart.
Dismantling started off on our dining table, until the wife came home that is...
Took a whole day to clean out all the crap, especially to get those acc. pumps clean
Amazing what some vinegar can do
Got some cheap gasket kits off eBay, the idle mixture o-rings were too big so had to get some new ones locally, the gaskets for the housings needed quite some adjustment before fitting somewhat ok. The "actuating pin?" on the membranes was too long so it wasn't possible to adjust the acc.pump volume to more than 0.35-0.4ml. Note to self, don't get the cheapest kit out there
Fitted new ign. leads
Overhauled the carb linkage
Checked the valves
Checked the dwell which is jumping 3-4 deg when accelerating from 700 to 1500rpm. Is this normal or do I need to rebuild the distributor?
Set timing to 35 deg@6000rpm
Aimed with printouts of Gary71's excellent Zenith info http://www.suggate.co.uk/index.htm MANY THANKS GARY! and a flow meter I got it running a lot sweeter than before and no more misfires on bumpy roads.
However, it has a slight hesitation when applying gas quickly below 3000rpm, possibly to too low acc. pump volume (or worn distributor...)?? It's also got a flat-spot around 5400 rpm...
Anyway, since above I've already managed to cover around 5000 km's this year

Nice job. I love cleaning up mucky parts and putting them back together - good for the soul
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young but I'm just backdated yeah

Re: 1971 2.2T
Mark and Steve, thanks for the kind words.
The sun was shining today so I decided it was a good day to fit the new sports exhaust, a Dansk 2-in 1-out bought a few months ago. Not only did it sound nice, it was also a bonus that the knocking engine noise kind of drowned in the raspy exhaust note. No it didn't really but I've decided to ignore that for now and just enjoy driving the car over the summer, hopefully it'll hold together...
