911 Cam nuts will not undo

Post by Chopperman »

Having applied over 150ft lbs of torque which eventually twisted the 1/2"drive off  the nut still remains firmly holding the Cam sprocket inplace
Any suggestions?

Try using two breaker bars instead of a torque wrench. Do you have the correct crows foot for the nut and socket for the cam? They can be very tight. Also some folk use thread lock which causes problem. A little heat would soften the thread lock.

Hope that helps.

Applied heat to the nut but not too much that it tempered it.
Was using a 3/4"drive T bar on the end of the can shaft.
I will order a breaker bar today but not too sure the U/J will take the load?

I ended up using a compressed air impact wrench on mine. Everything else had failed.

I always uses an air wrench as well, no need to lock anything.

If you haven't got a compressor, for occasional use the Clarke mains electric impact gun is pretty strong and good value.

Thanks MT, think thats the route I'm going with more heat on the nut this time.
Don't like Ratchet guns, there's a very good reason we didn't use them on aircraft !

Eventually got the right hand cam nut to undo with lots of heat and cooling.
Out of interest, the camshaft had nearly 3mm of end float, the seal retaining cap nuts (3) were hand tight. This is on an engine that was meant to have been professionally built.
There was a tube load of silicone between the left hand chain cover and number one cylinder head bolt.
