Post by Cortina »

Moggy ,
don't be shy .......... I saw at least one stage time where you were quicker than Dessie in the 911 !!

(If I can get one of those on the Circuit next month ... I'll be happy !! (esp as it's a 3L for that event))
Royal Enfield .. still in India
GL 1800 Tour DCT, for pleasure / Fantic 240 Professional - play
Rally 911 (1966) build parked for a while
Rally 928 (work started again - inc serious weight loss programe !)
.... and now another VW Up GTI owner.

He had a couple of punctures, in NEW tyres, which made him very happy!

Moggy was going very well and it was most unfortunate to have a two punctures, one of which we had to change on stage.

The usual happened, first the quick lift jack wouldn't quick lift, without encouragement from frantic hitting with the handle and then the car started to roll forward off the jack! Lost at least 7 minutes. (note to self - practice wheel changing!)
The second puncture was towards the end of a stage and we managed to change it on the following road section, but still lost a bit of time. The tyre had only done one stage!!

Up against Pinto engined Mk1 Escorts with a VW camper engine we will always be up against it, but to be there or thereabouts with Dessie is great. He must have about 40bhp more than us! All very encouraging especially as this was only our second outing together.

Remember: Rallying rule No1 - we are here to enjoy ourselves. I know I did.

PS Moggy left for a 2 week business trip today so may not be around for a while.

Hi guys... I'm back.

I splashed out on a new set of tyres for the rally so was looking forward to it, especially as it was dry. Started off good enough... Keith and I were really starting to click now, which enabled me to have more confidence going round the bendy bits. Keith encouraged me to try a new technique of setting the car up for the corner and powering round the bends rather than sprinting like hell to a corner, braking at last minute then holding the corner only to boot it on the exit and hang the back out... looked dramatic but not fast. The new technique really felt like it was enabling me to start pushing round the corners more, while keeping the front pointed into the corner, kinda how you see an escort slide round a corner, but less sideways. Was concentrating on developing this while still driving as fast as I could  when we had our first puncture in 3 years, on a bloody long stage too  so we decided to change it mid stage. Keith has already covered the Benny Hill like change, as far removed from a F1 change as you can get  7 minutes approx lost.

Then a stage or 2 later the same happened, near the end of the stage, same wheel too  so we changed it between stages. Bloody new tyres  who needs 'em
