hi all

about a year ago I sold my spare steering wheel that I had covered, thinking that would be the end of that, however the buyer then asked would I consider covering a few spare wheels he had.... ...that was 3...... then he had some friends who wanted them doing...... so I'm now just about ready to send back to him the last 5 wheels, which means I've done about 10 or so in total

double wrapped or single, all with a repaint of the spokes and in some cases repainting the horn push assembly, both 380mm and 400mm








its a bit of a hobby and a means to help fund the restoring of the etype, so I can't do them within days, but assuming a steady demand, its about 4/5 weeks turn around

for a new leather cover its £200, for a double wrap plus felt add a further £120
to strip and repaint of either the wheel spokes or the horn push if required is a further £100 each, (etch prime and satin black)

postage is in addition to that, usually a further £35, recorded delivery within the UK, or they can be collected dropped off in either Battersea or Guildford

It does look like a nice job.

How does the leather compare to the original, from the pictures it look like a heavier grain? Do you use a recovering kit?

Sorry Andrew, haven't been on the forum this week...answer is no to the kit, I bought one once but it wasn't right....so I made my own and that's how this all started.


Its also much easier to cut the leather too wide around the spokes and cut to the correct size once its all in place, rather than try and cut it to a given width....there are subtle differences between the sizes of the spokes between plastic rims and the softer fake leather looking rims, which means a standard kit is not necessarily going to fit

So I buy the hides and cut my own as I have number of guide templates

Having looked at a number of sites and companies who offer this service all new ones have a degree of grain, it will soften over time, have just about come to the end of the last hide so perhaps I'll look out for a smoother one next time though

No problem Bootsy, I'm assuming your old ones are a bit worn out, just send them over and I'll use them as a pattern..

apologies for what is a bit of advertising, but i finished another few wheels recently and having used a smoother softer leather was pretty pleased with the results

That leather looks much nearer to the original than the first batch.You must be pleased with the results. Any chance you could darn a couple of pairs of socks for me?

thought I'd do a little update ...

Latest wheels have been a bit more varied, having done 2 of the 4 spoke versions for the 3.2 Carreras for Nigel and Butzi, but also a couple for Phil Hindley at 9Tech

first one was a 380mm 3 spoke which is the kind used on the 2.7 and 3.0 Carreras







then lately have done a really nice old 400mm from a 69S that Phil is restoring....bit of pressure on there as I am sure the rest of the car will be turned out to a beautiful standard






enjoyed doing these later ones as with the lack of double wrapping the form is much firmer, so the leather seems to be more able to be dressed tightly around the rim, especially the slim 69S wheel which was a delight to do
