BMW 2002 tii

Post by mrg3.6 »

Having obtained a generally negative response on the merits of owning/driving and ultimately importing an early Aston Martin V8 into Singapore, I have turned my attention back to a more sensible proposition:

Image

Candid opinions on the pro's and con's of owning/driving/maintaining the classic BMW 2002 tii c/w with the (infamous) Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system would be most welcome :)

Thx

Well it's certainly your colour. Never had one but it's on my list of ownership. Can't think of any problems other than rust.

I have a 2002ti (twin carbs instead of MFI) but never driven it. Oddly enough I know of a tii just about to head to Singapore.

Nearly bought one of these decades ago, it had been tuned up and went very well. Unfortunately I found the vendor obnoxious and didn't buy on principal. Bought a 3 litre Mk 1 Capri (facelift headlights) instead. I've always fancied one though.

Chap who had some lessons learned:

AND it is greatly supported by Pelican Parts!

What is there not to like? Ah... David Evans at Classic and Sportscars swapped his reliable Mk2 Golf GTI for a 2002 ti: the long and short is that he had to rebuild everything. Typical low value old car wiht restored bodywork. It wows you but technically it is worn down to the ground so you end up doing years and years of neglected maintenance with now hard to find bits.
The Kugelfischer adds a layer of complexity but once sorted.... pretty exciting prospect!!!

Had an ebay 'bargain' '02 stored for many years now. The right spec: Alpine white, leather, manual, twin carbs, round lights... just not quite enough metal to call it's own. It will never be sold and will, one day, rise from it's axle stands like a rampant swan on viagra. Parts are still relatively cheap - as with all old BMs - and any 15, 16 or 2002 is just about worth taking on now as prices pick up, just. That beige one would look so much nicer parked in my drive... wearing the 7x14 early minilites stacked in the barn behind it!

Want mine to turn out like this...

but will probably be closer to this with the 9s 6d budget earmarked!

Brilliant car.........nothing wrong with kg injection ...its just that it doesn't like ham fisted spannering just like a mech injected Porsche or even TR6. If I ever finish my car and don't like it enough to keep one of these is on the list.......They look so right on minilites in period race trim.

A 2002 is to blame for my bmw "problem".. My dad had a turbo when I was growing up!
My god father had a 911 3.3 turbo which explains my "porsche itch" and my mum had a merc 280sl which is to blame for my penchant for mercedes.. Those three cars have inspired me to spend a lot of money on this hobby!

Back on track, part availability in the uk and us is great (can't speak for singapore), cars are fairly simple to work on and the forums are packed with great info.. Mfi can be a bit troublesome but can be fixed same as mfi 911's mercs, etc.
biggest problem is rust.. Might be worth getting one from the west coast of the us? (Not sure what side fo the road singapore use? )

Personally loved the Martini striped Turbo with the backwards Turbo striping on the front spoiler. Never owned one though :(
I love the smell of burnt rubber and hydrocarbons in the morning, it smells of......victory.

I restored a '73 tii early last year for a customer, fantastic cars and have a surprising turn of speed.

Most of the injection system problems stem from worn or poorly setup linkages rather than the metering unit itself.

As mentioned above and similar to most cars of that era rust is the biggest problem and the most expensive area to correct.

Have a look in the restoration section of my website there are project diaries for all the 2002s I've restored so you can see the areas that tend to be prone to rust.

Cheers

I had a tii in the late 70's and it was great - great all round vision, great boot space, great performance. No matter how hard or soft I drove it, always returned 25 mpg. Servicing was simple and easy, injection was very easy to calibrate and I did not have a single problem during my ownership. I sold it to my brother who replaced the rear axle, gearbox, clutch and windscreen within the following 12 months!

That wasn't fair: I innocently clicked on your '72 resto. I then cuffed the cat, went downstairs, kicked the Beagle, slammed the door, twice, wedged my head in the chest freezer, twice, kicked the Beagle, again, went upstairs and cuffed the cat for good measure. I'm not angry, i'm feckin' seething! Mine will never be that good and i know I can't afford to have you fillet it for me Jon. Stunning work. Life's a bitch...

Don't even get me started on the amazing quality and amount of A1 panel work on that '76...

I ran a couple as my 2nd and 3rd cars (not spare cars but in order of ownership). They were old then and both had a lot ofthings go wrong. I thought I knew all the probs from the first one. The second had had an entirely different set! Great fun to drive though at the time. Although I drove one more recently and it didn't really do it for me.

So make sure you get one that's up to scratch and it actually er floats your boat! I thought I'd quite like to try again, but I think I'd prefer to go lotus.

Graham
PS I was wrong, the one fault in common was overheating! Bit of a pita that.

This is the only picture I can find of my old 02, I never started the project unfortunatly due to doing a self build where my garage was.
It was a quite rare Targa version, if I remember correctly only about 100 rhd cars made.
OUCH !!! Just kicking myself !
