3.2 engine

I've just bought my car, its a 1973 ex-race car with a recently fitted 3.2 engine which is standard. For track days and hill climbs, what modifications would you recommend?

thanks
Paul

Remove/sell the 3.2 engine & replace it with an earlier mfi engine ...

the 3.2 engine's main plus point is that it is generally bullet proof - especially with the hydraulic chain tensioners.

compared with earlier engines it is noticeably lazier to rev, i guess due to it's longer stroke, but there are some nice modified engines out there based on the 3.2. a 3.5 conversion with ITBs springs to mind.

A Steve Wong Chip in the ECU is probably the most cost effective improvement with immediate gains in throttle response and overall performance - Ask Dyno Soar !

Go to Wayne Schofield Chipwizards for a live remap (much better than a plug and play Wong chip), fit a more free flowing exhaust from Turbo Thomas. Maybe 993 headers or keep standard rather than swapping to SSIs as they use too small diameter pipe for 3.2s.

Don't bother with aftermarket cone filters as the standard setup is far superior, though drilling or the airbox to expose more of the filter can help.

I'm no motorsport specialist but I would expect the 3.2's torque would be better suited to hillclimbing. They maybe a little less free revving but you still need to keep them on the buzz to get the best out of them.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the advice, I will visit Wayne sometime.
Any idea how much that'd cost?
How about the air filters?
Not keen to change the exhaust due to track day noise restrictions.

I bought the car from Paul Stephens after I saw it advertised on here. It has a racing history having won the Porsche giroflex in the '80s and also competed at Nurburgring and Spa. The engine which was with the car has gone elsewhere and I bought it with a 3.2 engine removed from an '80s targa car, it was fitted by Nick Moss and is standard as far as I know. The interior is mostly untouched from its racing days, full 6 point roll cage, racing seats, fire extinguiser, stripped out, etc - 2 replacement race spec recaros and harnesses fitted. The body has just had a minor restoration including full respray etc and is kind-of presented as an RS.

My intention is to use the car as a fast road car, for trackdays and hopefully hillclimbs. I'm not looking to win any races or set any impressive times, I'd just be happy to participate and hope my car will be reliable.

I've only driven it once so far, collected it just before Christmas, exciting times!
Will post some photos soon.

Sounds like a nice mix of old and new(ish)

I kept the standard paper airfilter and cut the whole end of the airbox cover off so the filter is exposed whilst still keeping the retaining clips. You say 'filters' is that a typo or do you have a different setup?

Exhaust and a remap are about the only 'bolt on' things you can do to a 3.2 without going in deeper. Turbo Thomas exhausts all seem to be well within permitted sound levels. If you are lucky you might see 250-260 bhp from an otherwise standard 3.2 but outputs to seem to vary massively dependent on health.

I'm guessing alittle but I think you are looking at around £500 at Schofields, but he does do a very thorough job often problem solving other engine related issues along the way.

+1 on Wayne
+1 on 993 heat exchangers
- I've fitted a lightened flywheel which lets it rev a little free-er but it's still driveable every day.
- poly gearbox mounts made the car feel faster.
- Rev it
- I'm getting to love my LSD as well now - recommended.

Is your car the red one with ST-ish arches? If so they brought it on the DDK German trip last September

Here are a couple of photos from the evening I collected her.
Better ones will follow once the weather improves.

You could do no worse than speaking to the man that fitted the engine,
Nick knows his stuff.

Car looks great - it's not the one I was thinking of. In my ever so humble opinion the car would look loads better with the wheel petals detailed - but it still looks great as it is

The red car that came on the German trip *still* isn't ready to sell. It was away for a couple of weeks at Essen looking like this :

which slowed down progress on the bodywork repairs. It should be for sale in a couple of weeks.

On the white car - for sprints and hillclimbs a lower final drive can also help. It's rare that you get out of third on such events and the drop in top speed doesn't compromise road use too much.

Would you like your Placido Domingo cassette back? ;)
