993 Owners BEWARE!

It seems there's a number of 993 owners amongst DDK ranks so thought I would share this.

I've been meaning to check my car for a while since I came across this:- http://www.jackals-forge.com/lotus/993/ ... pports.htm

Being a well looked after lowish mileage vehicle I wasn't too concerned about my car however when the bumper and impact protection were removed all was revealed:

Lurking behind the bumper and above the silencer (impossible to see without stripping) is a support plate which was fitted prior to paint:

What I hoped would be very minor actually looked quite nasty:

Fortunately the rust was fairly superficial and easily disked back - definitely the time to catch this; there was also some minor rust near the centre seams which aren't factory sealed:

Thoroughly cleaned, rust protected and etch primed I decided to seam seal my car:

Final steps will be primer, paint and plenty of protection especially in the centre chassis. Only problem being that what I thought would be a fairly inexpensive job has now proved more costly as I've decided to replace various tired looking heat shields, exhaust straps etc etc!

If your car hasn't been sorted in this area I recommend getting this looked at sooner rather than later.

Looks superb now, Darren. Top work and a great heads-up. No point waiting for it to get worse!

I recently learned that I'm not very good at going around sharp left hand bends - especially when carrying too much speed on a greasy, damp, loose surface

The high kerb I came into contact with left my OSF wheel, suspension and wing looking none too pretty :(

Image

As they say though 'every cloud' - a chance to deal with some outstanding niggles and another cautionary tale for you 993 owners.

As I was replacing the OSF wing I decided to tidy up the complete front end and this meant dealing with some brown stuff I had noticed in the lower screen corners by the a-posts. There was no bubbles or other signs to suggest anything serious however lurking deep down the dreaded 'R' had started to take hold........

Image

This was swiftly disked back and treated.....

Image Image

Primed and painted.......

Image Image

Unfortunately, as I found, this work will probably mean a new screen....

Image

Along with complete new front suspension, rack, tyres etc. the car is back to looking its best....

Image

Obviously just the outset of a potential rust issue but one all 993 owners should contemplate dealing with in the not too distant future.

Cheers,
