I'm not sure I fancy riding that. The mismatch in the rear triangle surely puts stress on the frame?

It's survived this long - empiricism trumps theory.

Its a c1888-90 Singer 'Royal', getting quite close to the earliest 'Safety cycle'. It is utterly wonderful to ride if you like old things, a bit rattly on coarse surface-dressed British tarmac. Fixie, with very gentle brake. Comfortable, despite and because it is pretty heavy. The rear legs, stems and possibly the forks are solid steel bar. It's new to me, and im very pleased with it, I did 13 miles in an hour, and 21 in 1 1/2 hours. Hopefully it'll carry me the 60 miles of the London-Brighton Veteran car Run on Sunday.....

It perfectly demonstrates how (not really very) far bicycles have come in their lifetime. I think it probably represents the wheel at its earliest as a form of accessible individual personal transport. It must have been astonishing to have one of these in 1890. True travel/transport independence. W

Independence at a price most probably could not afford as the cost was around 6 months salary.

It's surprisingly similar to my Schwinn to ride. Very comfortable, though not ideal for hills or speed. WImage

Interesting.
Heard the guy on American Pickers program say the same, a cruiser of a bike.
The old one looks a short wheelbase to me, hence my comment.
Can get tyres for the very old machines?
