3.2 Carrera to '73 RSR fast road & trackday rebuild

Post by redrobin911 »

Another 911 project - like i needed this one as well as my '65 race car!

This car will be for sale - i was going to keep the car but with other projects not to mention work! etc. I've decide to sell this car. I won't sell it untill it is finished so please don't ask! Please see the For Sale section on the forum for full details.

This posting is to show the considerable work that has gone into the car.

The story starts with the '65 shell and my decision not to make that car into an RSR. Having carefully saved the the front steel wings and steel rear flares it made sense to use them on another 911.

Having research this forum and others the choice was to use either a 911 SC or a 3.2 Carrera. I found a this 3.2 locally and had all the usual rust problems.

My thoughts for the car were very straightfoward from the onset. Build an RSR that could be driven at weekends and trackdays that didn't cost a fortune to build. This meant that a bear metal restoration was always going to be over the top. My theory is that if all the 25 year old rust in the 3.2 was all removed and replaced with new steel, that it should last another 25 years - or more?

Shell Specification

The plan is simple, remove all the rust, rebuild the shell with new parts and build it to an RSR specification. This means that the wings and flares had to be steel (which i have) and the front and rear bumpers, rear duck tail and luggage compartment to be fiberglass, i had already cpurchased all these parts prior to my change of plans on my '65 race car build. Therefore the bodywork would be as the '73 RSR's where made.

The following photos are just a small selection of over 100 taken so far in the rebuild.

The usual areas all needed attention - inner an outer sills, kidney bowls, battery tray, windscreen scuttle, front inner wings and luckily the floors and front door pillars were in good condition. Doors were also perfectly good.

Image

The photos that follow show mostly the repair of the LHS of the 3.2 - the RHS was repaired to the same specification.

Image

Sills completly shot at front and.....rear.. inside and out!!!!

Image

Kidney bowel & door slam panel removed as rotten - rear flare removed prior to fitting RSR steel flare.

Image

Image

Front inner wing was also poor - this photo taken after affected arear cut out and repaired

Image

Same story for the battery compartment.

Image

Sills and jacking point repaired and ready to fit the rear steel flares

Image

Forward of the sill also needed a reapir done.

Image

The bodyshop guys very neatly cut out the old flare and flanged the body to accept the steel flare - this also had the benefit of being able to spot weld the flare on rather than seam welding which can distort the flare beyon use. A small repair to the inner wing was required on this side also.
The rear flares are beatifully fitted.

Image

Pic below shows the rear flare spot welded in place and starting to look very RSR!!

Image

This pic shows the sills finished and seam sealed

Image

This image shows the new bodywork all fitted and looking good.

Image

Front RSR flare fitted and filled with a skim of filler to the correct profile.

Image

Rear panel had to be modifed to accept the RSR rear bumper and the ducktail.

Image

This shows the panel modifications and the flare now in primer.

Image

The body work and the considerable time spent on making good all the rotten areas no starts to pay off and as we speak the car is in primer and ready to be painted. Sills and door panel now painted and looking good.

Image

Same story for the front inner wing etc.

Other pics of the bodywork taking the RSR shape.

911 back from the paint shop looking every bit the RSR - looks stunning in Guards Red. See pics below.

As you see we've dropped the engine and transmission out of the car. The 915 had some poor syncros so they're being replaced. The engine was pulling strong with no smoke (has always been well serviced) no not going to touch it other than the exhaust mods.

Image

The next week or so should see the car back on its wheels with new six and four pot calipers, new discs, pad, brake lines etc. Still lots more to do.

The restoration is moving with some pace with front and rear suspension all being blasted and painted. The new brake calipers look awesome. Control arms all have new bearings, also new discs all round and braided hoses etc.

OK a little more work has been done. Transmission and engine now back where they belong. I put some nice "amber" tin ware areound the engine - thanks to Andy at RSR - also fitted the heat exchangers, silencer and the new oil lines. All that needs dong is to cable up, refit oli and fuel lines and fire it up! Once all that is finished all that remains will be the fitout of the interior and rewiring the lights.

I'm really please with the quality of finish and the attention to detail - the car is going to be a cracker!

A special thanks must go to Andy from R to RSR for his help in this project and for supply so many of the parts.

Image imagewheels(dot)co(dot)uk do a nice set of fuchs replicas - not expensive and they can do 9's and 11's no problems. I had considered braid wheels and also and a friend has a period set of BBS 9's and 11's but the only wheel is the fuchs (or copy). Correct/vintage Fuchs are out of all buying - expect to pay north of £5k for a wheels that have metal a minimum of 30 yrs old -think not!

Started sorting the interior and fitted a lightweight carpet set and a pair of BF Torino seats. I've ordered a new head-cloth and will get that and the RS door cards fitted through the week. The car look very well and I'm looking forward to getting it finished.

Been very busy with work and was away on hols but hey.... I got my Wheels! I ended up getting the wheel from Harry at Image Wheels - these are 9 & 11 x 15 with standard RSR offsets. They are a 3 piece wheel with the centres painted black but with the alloy anodised rather than polised as the original RSR were.

I've put a new set of Pirelli Corsa Classic tyres which as you know are now available for RSR rims, they look great and with the new rims the car looks a treat. Car has a small oil leak from the oil cooler so need to get that sorted then off to MOT.
Sorr y image quality isn't great - taken with phone.

Looks good! Are you swapping the dash and window trims to complete the early look?

I wasn't going to because I'd have to buy new door handles, chrome trim trim for all windows and well as buying window frames for the doors, i might look into this? I still think that the black window/door trims with the black handles etc looks very good if not "period". I must post better pics of the interior as it is finished bar the two front footwell carpets - interior is also all black - so the black exterior trim works well.
