Home cinema set up

Post by dogbower »

We are about to lay underfloor heating and concrete screed in our lounge so am trying to decide where to put speakers.
The TV bit will be down one end with the rest of the room off to one side.
Because of this I would rather stay with a 5:1 rather than a 7:1 set up.
I will be running the cables under the floor and am on a tight deadline so wont have time to experiment with sound pre screed.
I was wondering about the merit in sinking the speaker stands into the screen.
The TV area will be 5m by 5m.
I havnt been paying much attention to what is happening in the home cinema world, anything coming up I should make allowances for?
Thanks Stuart

I think that speaker stands on spikes direct onto a concrete floor is a good option. It will isolate your speakers from the floor, which is a good idea. If you sink the stands your are then committed to the locations you chose now, and bass frquencies can transfer to the floor and lead to accoustic issues - unless you then isolate yor speakers from your stands with spikes, rubbers etc.

Loads of sound buffs on here, so someone will be along after the tour stage finishes!

Hi,

Don't sink your stands into the screed, you can't commit yourself to the position without having a decent amount of time to listen and there is no acoustic benefit. I wouldn't worry about bass transfer to your solid floor, that's only a problem if your floor is hollow. If you are unsure about position put more cable under the floor than you need, if you don't use it you can just cut it off.

You could PM me a sketch and I could make some suggestions.

Cheers

Anyone got a good infra-red solution

Every time I do this ...and its been a few ... I actually now HATE :violent1: the wires to the remote speakers .

Seems this would potentially avoid your concrete problem too

Infra-red, eeeek, worse than bell-wire. Unless you can get directional infra-red of course!

And find a way to power them via IR.
