Does the later C engine fit onto an earlier A gearbox, doe the flywheel and clutch need to be changed?

It's a while ago but I believe this:

The C engine has a 200mm flywheel and 741 box with 12v starter.

The A engine has a 180mm flywheel and 644 box with 6v starter.

Bolt the 180mm flywheel to the C engine and keep the 644 box and 6v starter.

Keep the 200mm flywheel and rebush for the 12v starter in the 644 box.

Much like wedging a 12v 1600 tp into a 6v sp beetle box but without the health threatening magnesium grinding! Anybody else remember those days... Gulp!

Box is 716 and i am converting to 12V, could you refigure for me??

I am afraid I am not technical, but my 356A used the original gearbox 1958 and I had a Super 90 C engine and I also had a 12v conversion.

So to answer your question, yes, not much help but at least you know it can be done

716 (one year only I think?) is still a 6v box but two mount rather than the later single mount. No matter as it will still take the C 200mm flywheel and 12v starter. You can get the bush to sleeve the starter spigot from KK etc. They may have some superior knowledge too, as will anybody that lifts the phone at PRS i'm guessing!

As far as I am aware the "C" normally ran with 6volt ( mine did ) although it could be supplied 12v as a special accessory.

My 59 'A' has a 180mm flywheel as mentioned and I believe the 200mm version came out on the 'B'

As Roy says, perhaps your C is a 6v 180mm flywheel? Straight bolt in...

180 and 200 mm flywheels will go,its the clutch and release bearing you need to get right,you will need a clutch pressure plate with a "top hat" they are avaliable in 180 and 200 mm I think,and an A type release bearing. starters 6-12v its all in the bush and the mounting holes on the starter.

as graham mentions both will fit,i have a 68 912 motor fitted to my 54 gearbox,fitted a 356 flywheel of we went,i have since upgraded flywheel by machining flywheel to take 200 mm vw clutch,also lightning at the same time,electrics upgraded to 12v,still running through 6v starter,had no problems

Funny this thread, if you search all my threads they are normally associated with the pains of doing a 912/c engine into a 356.

My advice is to make sure you know exactly what you have before you begin, dont make any assumptions. measure the flywheel, check the starter size/ type, it can all get confusing otherwise
