Le Mans Classic 2012 - getting a drive or entry????

Post by redrobin911 »

Hi - as some of you know I'm building a FIA '65 911 race car that I hope to race in the Masters Series and other notable classic races, UK and abroad. Ultimately I'd like to race the car at the Le Mans Classic but I'm only too well aware how hard it is to get an entry - you need the right car (pref not a replica) and to be "known" to the ACO. I'm slightly lacking in both these departments at the moment and even though the 911 would be ready I know I stand little chance getting an entry for the 2012 race.

In an attempt to get the ball rolling early I'm looking for some pointers as to whom I can contact with the view of sharing a drive. More than happy to pay my share of costs etc. Obviously I'd much prefer to be in a Porsche of some description but happy to consider anything to get a run out!!

I would also consider using my '65 911 and offering shared drives to others if I thought we would be able to get an entry? I'm open to all ideas.

I will upgrade my race licence to International Historic through the season (if I ever get out!). I've raced 911's for nearly 10 years now from 2.7RS, 964's, 996's and my current 996 GT3 Cup here in Ireland and with PCGB in the UK.

Any help at this stage would be gratefully accepted.

Hi Redrobin, I was at a track day in belgium recently with a keen driver/collector, who among other things tried last time to get an entry for his real 3.0L RSR, co-driving with Guys van Lennep (past winner of Le Mans), and was told that unfortunately because his car ran in the US rather than Europe he wasnt welcome. But of course they could find another car for Guys to co-drive. Just wanted to share some degree of the difficulty of what you are proposing. Hope that isnt too de-motivating. My suggestion: its who you know.

classic le mans

Post by 911-356 dave »

It is getting very difficult to get an entry to race at classic lemans because of the international popularity. I have a friend that raced last year with an ex triumph spitfire entry he was finally allowed entry because he could prove the car had ran there before. I dought whether an entry would be considered purely because of FIA papers and age.
Paul Stevens and a friend of mine are preparing a car for entry but not sure how successfiul they will be? will let you know.
Cheers Dave
