Rear window Fitting

Post by waltham wanderer »

I've been reading on various websites the step by step instructions to fitting / changing etc., rear window / gasket , and all note the use of a sealer gasket. In particular the 3M Windo-Weld Ribbon Sealer is mentioned.
I've had no luck in obtaining same [ or similar] from UK suppliers - anyone had any joy ?

Thanks as ever -
Steve

I'm going to be facing the same issue at some point....

just found this on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Porsche-914-Winds ... 0335599201

I'm sure this will do the job though I'm still not sure what the alternative is.

I'll keep poking around

thanks

Hi guys,
I just used this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... K:MEWAX:IT
To replace my windscreen. It worked atreat and I'm sure it will do the same job for the rear screen.

That looks interesting, always good to have glue bondo options for bits and bobs. It says in the advert that if the car is newly painted - etch to the body metal.. not sure Ive read that correctly, I suppose it depends what you mean by newly painted.

I noticed when stripping down my car that the chrome bits around the window/door frame were all stuck on with black gloop as well as the screws of course. Just wondered if that was standard or if the gloop is an aftermarket 'enhancement' to keep the chrome in place...

thanks

Yes, put on by the factory to stop the rollbar trim twisting when the lower nut is tightened. On the side trim to hold in place; then the screws can easily be attached and aligned.

The original front and rear glass were held in with the butt tape.
I found the tape very easy to use.

aha - ok thanks at least I know to use some gloop when I eventually get round to putting them back on. I did have a fight getting the targa top padding off (due to the gloop) and unfortunately bent the trim.. probably need a new piece :-(

I ground the lip back to metal before applying the primer that came in the kit then the gloop. It makes sense otherwise the bond is only as strong as the paint to metal bond.

As Kevin says this is not original but then not a lot of my car is!

Ah ok thanks so if I was going to use the gloop method Id be better to fit the window(s) before spraying and mask it all off neatly.

Cheers, not original but I guess it would be stronger longer term and not so prone to leaks?

Thanks

No, I wouldn't say that.
I sprayed without glass then just removed the paint from the lip before fitting the glass. I think this is better than masking which always misses a bit somewhere!
