Galway Rally 2011 - Historics (now + incar and bonnet cam)

Post by Cortina »

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE2p3tq4d-I

Just got back last night , and someone forwarded me the above clip.
We have our own incar and bullet cam on front of bonnet (which even though I say so myself - is very impressive !!) ....... but that will take a while to sort out in the capable hands of the tech dept (navigator) :)

Very very wet and slippy ..... but it ended well , so happy days.

Cracking!!

In car was great. Some awful conditions there..... bad gravel all over the road, mud, standing water, then patches of dry just to lul you into a false sense of security. great driving. Seems like one hell of a lot of power you still manage to get down to the road, I would have expected to hear that engine noise rev all over the place as it accelerates and looses traction in those conditions. Would love to have half the power of that thing  How was it under braking? if I remember right it's an auto isn't it? so no engine braking.... it must eat pads/discs.

Seemed a little soft on the front, or is it just me. Grounded out a load of times, seems the suspension has a little problem holding up the weight of that big V8. Beautifull sound though 8)

What camera are you using?

Are you bringing it out to play up at the Ulster later this year? We've got it in our diary again for this year, would be great to meet up and have a little DDK head to head  although last time I was up against that beast in Flanders a few years back with Tuthill behind the wheel I got my butt majorly kicked

An Auto ??? ... You can't be serious ?? (did you think I was taking my left hand off the wheel to scratch something ??)

Conditions were "interesting" to put it mildly - Just have to be gentle with throttle to avoid unnecessary wheelspin ... if you just plant it all the time , you end up in a hedge or stone wall.

Yes , too soft all round , so I just keep replacing sacraficial (spelling ??) pads on the btm of the sumpguard ...... should really harden it up , some day ... some day. Brakes survived remarkably well - only on really quick stuff on dry roads did I suffer ... eg IOM last year.

Semi - professional camera set up , I leave that bit to navigator.

Ulster - no again I'm afraid , unless a) I don't get to Barbados with the car ( :) ) or b) they ship it back very quickly !!

You're doing the Sol?? how jealous am I :P Ulster is end of Aug (I think) so should be plenty of time to get it back from Barbados (start June isn't it). Was wanting to do the Sol myself as there was a cracking deal on offer for car, flights, hotels etc... was going to make it a family holiday + rallying + sun = perfect mix 8)

Did you sort out the gear ratios, IIRC you were only using 2 effectively (just had my close ratio box built by Mike Bainbridge along with an LSD - makes a hell of a difference, testing it in the forest next week).

Just watched the in car again. You seemed to have prior knowledge of the standing water, was it your second time through this stage? or maybe the driving position is higher than the cam and you can see it more clearly. Either way I know I would have aquaplaned like a b'tard in the 914 a couple of times in that stage.

Cheers

Barbados is later than that for Historics - 14th to 26th July ..... so virtually no hope !!
Gear ratios still the same , but we did see top on that stage .... once !
Knowledge of water - yes , 2nd time through , so were sort of half prepared + written warning before start of stage (1.35 Tonnes + skinny tyres = well behaved on water)

Deal on Barbados is good - $2,900 USA = return shipping of car + return flights + two weeks in hotel + entry for rally and sprint + insurance. No brainer IF you have the money !

You're a long time dead ....................... :)

Wow  written warning eh..! last time I got one of those it was for lamping my old boss one  Don't think you're going to get that kind of weather over in Barbados. That price is soooooo good. When does the car get picked up and when do you get it back?

Approx 4 weeks before and after ... but only about half of that is transit time .... according to the organisers ... the rest is "port p......ing about time"

very very tempting now :drunken:

What port do I need to get the car down to? is it just the car? or car on a trailer? Is it single venue servicing (need to figure out how many mates need to come to help out)? I'll have to figure out tonight what events in the BHRC that might effect for me (Ulster for definite). Have you done it before??

Portsmouth - just the car ... Service , single venue , and everyone helps ... I'm not planning to take anyone !! (well OK - a navigator) ... the rally is "only" 75 km from memory ... I've seen longer stages !!

Search Barbados Historic Carnival ... and do some homework !!

Never done before , but have spoken to people who have .... recomended to put it mildly (they even ammended their regs so I was eligible !!)

Fabulous footage from Galway, Alan! 8) What speeds are you hitting on those stages? I guess flat in 3rd is the top side of 100? You're getting much better traction than I would have thought on wet tarmac from the whale!

Well Done! :drunken:
