Am I making the right decision (part deux).
Hi all,
I was going to reply to AlphaOmega's post as I am in a similar position cash-wise, but thought I'd start a new one..
I'd love a genuine pre-IB but the car must be my daily too. I ran a Moggy Minor hot rod for 5 years as my daily (black Lancia twincam on cover of Retro Cars a few months back if you saw it). I got a bit fed up with 1957 ride/wipers / heater etc.
So here's my plan. I have a £20K budget but i'd like to keep £5K back for running costs and some mods.
Phase 1
Try and find the best car possible for 15K - probably a 3.2 Carrera or perhaps an SC. Run the car for six months and sort out any niggles.
Phase 2
Backdate to early IB/custom look. bright window surrounds, mirrors and some early dull finish Fuchs. Lower car slightly. Backdate seats / interior.
Phase 3
Backdate to pre-IB. Custom front valence / spoiler
My main query concerns the value of a backdated vehicle (Phase 3). I understand about doing the conversion properly (e.g long bonnet front slam panel etc). I see a lot of backdates on PH for high twenties but then occasionally one for 15K (which is tempting). I am assuming that the higher value cars are all steel OEM Porsche panels etc. Is this the main key to retaining the value? Any other pointers?

Jonny that was my plan about 5 years, but I've come to realise that the Impact Bumper model is a good looking 911 which every year looks more of a classic car than it ever did so I intend to keep it the at is albeit still with some mods. I blow hot and cold about backdating, unless the backdate is very thorough and 'authentic as it can be' I don't feel that they have much more value than a non back dated IB.

One of the biggest problems with a backdate if you want it to 'look right' is the interior. You are in for major expense.
A backdated exterior with an 80's interior is a big turn off on value IMHO.
A bit like an early interior with updated exterior (turbo flares, whale tails etc) which was all the rage in conversions in the 80's and 90's. These are not 'valued' cars now. Just my humble opinion.
Regards
Mike

Any excuse to post picturesJonny Hart wrote:Nige. Got any pics of your car that I can look at?
I've since removed the Gulf sticker as I wasn't 100% sure of the look. Still needs some things finishing like painting and refitting the sill covers, duck and bumper blades need paint as well.
From about 4 years ago
And a bit of recent work, shows what can rust on a later car though it wasn't that bad compared to some out there:

Nice car Nige.
Here is a car that illustrates my point perfectly.
What is this car trying to be?

Nige - I think you have convinced me - nice motor. Btw, what's behind the rear bumper rubbers? Thinking of deleting them and adding a small number plate light.
Just realised we've kinda hi-jacked the early 911 board to talk IBs - oops.
Btw, as we're doing pics (and well off-topic) - this was my last ride.
Lancia twin cam 130bhp. Curb weight 750 kg.

Hi Jonny,
In case it helps we are working on a 3.2 at the moment that may help your decision. It is not a full back date but is using some mild mods. This includes, removing the front fogs and fitting an SC front spoiler, remove the side repeaters and wing mirrors, fit chrome mirrors, chrome the headlight rings and door handles, strip and bright anodise all the window trims, remove the rear over riders and headlight washers- tig the holes up, RS style engine lid, plus we are refurbing some 9 x 16s for the rear.
As I said these are mild mods but yet do personalise the car and retain its IB look.
Once finished I will post some pics if it helps. For now here is are some pics one of which was taken today after re painting the sides.
The fuchs are now stripped and will be polished- tomorrows job
HTH

Thanks everyone. I went and checked out a couple of 3.2s yesterday up close and was smitten.
Anyone know what bumpers are on the bronze car?
Alan - you've hit the nail on the head. I want to buy a good car to start with so don't want to completely tear it apart. Just a few reversible subtle changes.
I gonna go over to impactbumpers now to ask some specifics about mods.
Thanks again for the input everyone!
