conversion questions

Post by jonat127 »

Hello folks,
I am starting work on the engine for my 6 conversion and have some questions:
1. Where is the best place to get the carrera chain tensioner conversion kit?
2. I know the oil cooler needs a modification but what exactly needs doing and do you have any recommendations for who can help?
3. What do I need to do with/about the flywheel?

Finally, please see my wanted post

Thanks
Jon

HI Jon
the oil cooler you can get away with putting a fitting on the oil feed 1/2 way down the cooler, so the feed pipe is not neer the rear suspension, the flywheel will need the fit the 911 box in the 914/6, what engine are you fitting and has it a 6 or 9 bolt flywheel??, if a 6 you can fit a push or a pull clutch, a 9 bolt will need a pull clutch only from the 2.2 911 and the center plate for the small splines. again depends on the engine you are fitting.

Jon - are you really sure you want to??

it's really not a cheap process to do properly - the oil cooler and flywheel are but two of the problems -

then you need engine mountings - if you do it the factory way, that isn't cheap (although it is probably the best way to do it)

then you are into an oil tank - definitely not cheap - if you buy a new one and all the pipes etc then you won't get much change if any from £1500 (I'm going off the prices 5 years ago!)

then you have the electronics - CDI, etc..

exhausts

more power, needs better brakes....

As long as you know what you're taking on - then you'll have a great car at the end - just don't think the expense is over once you have the motor sat in the garage!!

Thank you gentlemen.
Mike, I have the later push on type oil cooler and I can see what needs doing now.
The engine is a 2.4T of 1972 vintage, it has a 6 bolt flywheel.

Ian, I am under no illusion as the she size of the job and the cost. It may well take me a couple of (several?) winters to complete (I drive during the summers and work in the garage in the winter)
This is my hobby so cost and time are not really an issue.
The way I look at it, at least I will have an interesting car to show for my money and efforts. Whereas all the golfers have is a silly jumper and a membership card, and a few ally rods with weights on the end!

Engine mount - I am hoping a fellow DDKer will release one he has in due course.

The engine came with Zenith carbs and points ignition so plumbing and wiring shouldn't be too much trouble.

Exhausts look expensive whatever way you go. Mittlemotor are listing some used ones at about 900 euro the pair but I think I would prefer stainless steel. Have made enquiries at Turbo Thomas who's prices seem reasonable and Patrick Motorsport have some very pricy ones. I am keeping an eye open on 914 world.
I haven't forgotten about the brakes, the instruments and gear linkage either. It is just that I have the engine on a stand now and it is being stripped down so that is what I am concentrating on first.

Thanks for the advice, keep it coming.

Hi Jon,

I have a couple of articles in the 'archive' describing the 4 to 6 conversion, one of which has a lot of what looks like useful part numbers. If you pm me your address I will copy them and post them to you. Every little helps as they say!!
