Thanks guys for the well wishes, less than 5 weeks to go!

Gary, as we are getting married in Glasgow and are having the whole day in one venue, no cars are needed apart from bringing Kate to the Venue from the hotel. I have been told that there is not enough room for her / dress / and Dad in an early car, so I've had to hire something else. :(

LONG POST!

I’ve been wanting to update this for some time, as my last post was so long ago, and there is a lot of water that has gone under the bridge since.

Soon after CLM 2014 the car broke down on the motorway, it just lost drive. After some inspection this happened:

Image

The MFI drive pulley (cam side) had worked loose and sheered off. After some ringing around the cam had to be re-tapped. The quotes I was getting to do the work was mostly time to get the engine out.

It then dawned on my, that if the engine is coming out anyway and its going to cost £xxxx to do the work, I wonder how much it would be to rebuild.

I rang a few places to get some prices so get and idea and then made the decision to go with one which was fairly local. I did the homework and talked to the company and a budget was put in place.

However, by the 3rd month, the budget was gone, there had been a lot of spending….. This is not a post to slag anybody off so I’ll move on…

By now the engine had only been stripped, the case had some work done to it (cleaned, time certed), crank balanced and laped, heads blasted, fan was powder coated, new guides, plating done, and a load of new parts like bearing, gasket set etc.

As the money had gone (there was nothing left!), I picked the engine up in the back of my car:

Image

The plan was to either to:
1) sell the car as is – I had already talked to about the sale on here
2) garage the car and over time build it, hey its just a big jigsaw

Then my father passed away suddenly and it gave me a kick up the backside about it. I was lucky enough to have owned an original Banksy print which the wife didn’t like and had been laying under the spare bed for about 9 years! I sold this to give me a little money towards the build.

I used the money to get the MFI pump rebuilt, some machining work (oil bypass) and buy some of the parts still needed like a 4 rib oil pump – some of the longevity items.

Then I got a phone call from a good friend of mine Peter, theorangeperil on here. He has been taking his car to a well known and respected Porsche garage for many years. They don’t advertise and they are only Porsche, they race early cars, so they know theses cars inside out.
Peter had mentioned my problems and I was told to give them a call as they wanted to speak. Pete arranged a beer with the owner.
We talked over a couple of beers about what has been done and what could be done. I still needed cams, the original plan was to go with e cams but some alternatives were offered, we agreed a very reduced rate to assemble the engine – I cant thank these guys enough, guardian angels!

Over the next couple of months, I was dropping parts off on a call off basis and soon we had a complete engine.

And mated to the car! I couldn’t believe it! Within a year of it going off the road it was back on, something I didn’t think was going to happen.

The final spec of the engine is:

2.45L
86mm JE pistons with Cryogenically treated cylinders (Supertech)
9.8:1 Comp
Kent custom grind cams – E+ specish
Heads are standard MFI T size (I30 / E32) – I took lots of convincing to keep them this size by the builder but we were trying to build a torquey engine
MFI pump cleaned and recalibrated to E spec including space cam
Oil bypass mod with Supertech 4 rib oil bump (908 style)
ARP Head bolts
ARP Rob bolts
Balanced rods and crank
New flywheel
New valves, guides, springs
New tensioners, ramps and chains
Sachs Lightweight clutch

The first drive was scary but exciting at the same time. As it was October / November last year and it was really mild, I used to go out very early in the morning and get 100 miles here and there. Slowly these built up and we did the necessary oil changes, re-torqueing etc.

Image

Finally, when I had done a lot more miles it was time to get the car / MFI pump dialled in. For this I went to see Nick at Redtek, on recommendation from here.

Nick had the car for a week or so, and did the necessary pump adjustments, before the power run to see what power it would make.

When building it, I was shooting for about 180hp but with plenty of usable torque. I didn’t want a screamer, and this wouldn’t be possible with the small ports of an MFI T.

I then received a mail from Mark, the office manager at Redtek, it said:

“Hi Rich,

The car is back from the rolling road and Nick is happy and impressed with the numbers. It maxed out at 209Hp!”

I nearly fell off my chair! It made good torque too - 189 ft-lb

Image

I went to pick up the car, and I spoke to Nick, he was extremely complimentary about the power and the engine.

So that’s it, the car is now up and running and it all the hassle seems a distant memory. Having recently returned from the Oldtimer GP in it, the car is running sweet, and james has renamed it the sepia reaper!

A big thanks to Pete and 'the builder'

I can attest that Rich's car is not just in rude health, but looking fab too.
Our cars were happy company together in Germany and Belgium, and we're already planning the next jaunt.

If you look in your rear view mirror and see the Sepia Reaper, you'd better move over!
