Ragamuffin, my 1972 T/E!
Moderator: Bootsy
Just an update
I recently spent a great day with the Phil Raby and Ali Cusick for Total 911 over in Wales. It was the first time I had seen the generations next to each other and I was really surprised just how small my T is in comparison to the other models.
It was a long day 500 miles in just over 24 hours and I got 29mpg! Happy with that.

The car is now away for the winter, I am working through the electrics!

Early 911's
Hi,
I totally agree, Porsche became large and refined because of emissions, legal requirements etc, they lost they essence of what a pure Porsche was !
It stagger's me to drive a 997 compared to a pre 73 and difference between the era's is frightening, hence the huge increase in the early car values.
If I won the lotto, I would buy a 993 C2S or a M471 or a RUF.

To update this thread. Over the winter, I fitted a period us model Blaupunkt (still using a standard surround as I need to still get some brown vinyl), also fitted an ipod interface using the pin connector on the back. Dont really use the stereo but when commuting to work and sat in traffic, it's good to have the option.
I also went through all the electrical connectors and cleaned them up. The following from Early S Man on Pelican worked a treat:
1. Remove your bulb holders one at a time and clean & polish both the Faston tab and the holder body with HD rubbing compound or metal polish ... until bright and shiny brass is all you can see. Clean the Faston connector at each bulb with vinegar and old toothbrush, then rinse with distilled water ... you should see slight 'pink' coloration of the copper in the brass alloy! Put a small amount of Dow Corning 4 or 111 Silicone Grease on the tab and Faston connector and reconnect.
2. Clean the ground tab and connector at each instrument and treat with silicone grease.
3. Replace the bulbs.
Bulbs are really bright now. I also did every other connector in this way, replacing if necessary.
Whilst I was doing this, I noticed that there was a rattle in the speed switch and opened it up and fond this:
(sorry for the poor pic!)
Talked to our resident electronic guru, Tim and he said no problem. I popped up and he soldered one back in, and tested the CDI, just while I was there, again no problem.
Whilst up there I also picked up a rubber bumper insert from James, as when I took my front over riders off I have a couple of holes in it.
Next was to get the distributor rebuilt, I sent it to H&H ignition, came back like this:
I had quite a few problems timing it afterwards. The problems can be read here:
http://www.ddk-online.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=34704
Once the problem had been tracked down, new gaskets were fitted and it went off to Bob’s.
Within 24 hours of the car going to Bob, I had a phone call to say the car is ready for collection. I asked what it made on the Dyno, I was expecting a little less than it made 3 years ago which was 154bhp, it didn’t, it made 160bhp!
Picked up the car last night, and the difference is really noticeable. It seems to pull much stronger and freer, had lots of fun on the way home! There is a little 'stumble' at around 3200, but I can live with that.

Re: Ragamuffin, my 1972 T/E!
Another annual update
Drove the car for the first time today since the end of September last year.
Over the winter I decided to tackle a few oil leaks, which lead me from this:
My first engine drop on my own.
It needed a bit of a tidy up
I took the opportunity to put in RSR seals on the rockers, new gaskets including the cam and the MFI pump. I also installed a sound proof pad, which it had never had.
Tinware was powder coated, with new screws etc, new hoses and fuel lines. Fan and housing given a clean up.
I also replaced the shift coupler bushings with polyurethane ones (wow what a difference). The adjustment once the engine was back in was a bit of a pain, but I kept at it and shifts fanatically now. I actually found it easier to put it in 5th and do it from there.
I treated it to some polyurethane transmission mounts.
I am sure I have done a lot more than listed here!
Anyway, this is what the engine looks like now!

A yearly update!
Been away for a long time with the pending wedding and honeymoon next month, the car has taken a bit of a back seat.
Anyway, the car was featured in 911&PW, which was great.
Some of the pages:
I have also had a bit of a problem with the standard seats in my car, they gave me a little backache. I managed to get some secondhand BF Torino Nurburgring recliners, which needed recovering. As my car has a brown interior I have also struggled to get track down the right vinyl. In the end I managed to get the vinyl at my local auto upholsterers!!! I have always liked the houndstooth centers, so whilst out in China I got some made in Brown and cream, if you pop them together you get these!
Much better me thinks!
