MFI specialists - rolling roads

Post by hot66 »

In addition to Bob Watson, are there any other rolling road / dyno operators that are experienced / understand MFI ?

I'm heading back down to Bob's in a couple of weeks, but am always interested to hear about alternatives, especially if they are closer :)

There may be other rolling roads. There may be other MFI experts. There may, even possibly be another rolling road with an MFI expert.

BUT there can only be one person who, with a fag in hand, can sniff the exhaust fumes and diagnose an early 911 with MFI

Sounds like "This isnt just any old rolling road - this is a Marks and Spencers rolling road."

Are you in marketing by any chance?

James, is this to have your pump set after Fred rebuilt it? I only ask as chatting with Neil Bainbridge yesterday, who I think is one of the best mfi expert in the country,
he asked if there was an actual problem you were trying to sort out, and if so what were the symptoms. I wasn't sure if you had been to Bob's since Fred did the pump.
cheers, Mike.

I thought you already had this set up wicked-like? I'll DDK-google it.

Tuthills are doing quite a bit of MFI pump setup work nowadays. Francis has started doing all his own pumps and setting up with the faithful lambda sensor. Does it on the road, not the rollers. Lots of Euro rally boys coming over to get set up.

Fred rebuilt the pump and we returned to Bobs's where I achieved my near on 204bhp reading. Problem was that the new throttle arm bush in the pump was binding slightly so the throttle would not fully shut.

I removed & returned the pump back to Fred & he sorted out the problem & returned the pump ( in theory with non of the settings changed ) The car was NOT rolling roaded after this second refit of the pump.

I ran the car like this most of last year , through Europe , on the DDK run etc & it was pulling well , except it had a flat spot around 6000rpm & then it would pick up again around 6700 rpm. I've swapped in a new CDI box & had my dizzy rebuilt .... no change :(

Last week Mike Bainbridge checked the cam timing for me ( new chains have had chance to stretch & bed in ) and all was spot on there. He also checked the ignition timing ( just to make sure my timing light was working OK) and that was spot on too.

As of today, the engine appears to be running rich ( black plugs) , it coughs & splutters really bad at very small throttle openings ( which to a lesser extent it has always done ) & I feel the snappyness of the acceleration at the top end has gone. ( I am picky about these things though, but when you know something isn't right it's annoying) . Basically it doesn't feel like 200 bhp at the moment.

So, going to put it back on the rolling road & see wether the settings are off ( which they could be ) . I'm at Bob's next Tuesday.

As Neil points out the pump is actually pretty basic with just two adjustments controlling revs and fuel mix, but there are one or two other parts you need to check that
can cause pump setup problems, like worn butterflies, bad ht leads and worn injectors for instance, should any of these be 30 year old originals you may well be having
problems that you think are pump related. I think you may have had the butterflies done a little while ago and I'm sure you would have replaced the ht leads, but what
about flow testing the injectors?

throttle bodies fully rebuilt 2 or 3 years ago & rechecked & set up again last year on John M's flow bench

New injectors at the same time too ( although I had been wondering wether it was possible that some residue from the pump overhaul might have been flushed through & was causing an injector to stick ???? )

Ironically, HT leads not changed, although I have a new set I carry in the car which I suppose I should try :)

New Spark plugs 2 years ago

Rebuilt dizzy

Cam timing checked
