in the process of replacing my rear wheel bearings ....al stripped down apart from the hub ( and the handbrake assembly is still in place) . Been hammering at it from the rear using a small mallet & a correct sized socket to try & drive it out from the bearing..... the hub is not budging

Anyone got any tips ?

Bigger hammer!?

My normal method of removal is a slide hammer attached to the studs

I am sure you have, but behind the hub is the bearing cover plate held in with 4 M8 bolts- these have been undone?

Alan, the 4 bolt cover is still in place, although I have loosened off all the bolts


Slide hammers, something I don't own. Any recommendations as to one suitable for this job

You don't have to remove the cover, if I remember correctly you can't anyway as the hub is in the way.

The outer race will come off with the hub, and fits through the hole in the cover.

You can see it on these alloy arms where the bearing is now partially in bits.



A slide hammer is the tool of choice, but in the absence of that I just used a heavy club hammer, 6 inch extension/socket and battered it from the inside. One swift blow to give it a warning, then committed properly on the second and it was on the floor!

The only thing stopping it coming out is the small inner race, maybe a bit of heat applied from the inside will expand the race enough to allow you to tap the shaft out?

Be prepared for the grease inside the bearing to catch fire

I've been using the lump hammer, socket approach ....... 1/2 hour of smacking the shite out of it an bugger all movement .... gave up and went looking for a stiff drink. Will try again tomorrow, although my crow bar might make an appearance

How about two local farmers preloading with crowbars whilst you hit it?

Then get a propane torch on it.

It will be out soon enough!

This is what I did. I did have the arms off the car which has to help. The Inner race was left on the hub, A bearing puller and an angle grinder worked to get this off though.
The cover need to come off to get the outer race out of the arm.

don't worry, I'm using one from my impact gun . I might have to pay you another visit

I used a massive puller I borrowed like the one at the end of the first Pelican thread. I can't see how it would ever have come out without the correct tool.

Or some threaded bar with nuts, washers / sockets and spanners - tighten to pull through...

brute force, a big hammer a now knackered socket extension and some bruised knuckles .... but it's out .... time for more alcohol
