More power please, your ideas.

Post by nickT »

Hi,
after a week of daily use I have decided i need some more horses.
Open to suggestions from the tried and tested, cam and exhaust etc, too the more exotic.
Really looking for spec. of possible mods. and bhp it could give.
My starting point is a stock (i think) '68 swb 912.

Looking forward to your ideas, Nick.

Buy my 2.3 vw based flat four - 134bhp at the wheels.

Now left without a home since I sold the car & the (busted) original engine back into Italy.

That would give you enough 'pep' to keep you satisfied, even when you venture out with the 911 chaps.

Case closed!

Anywhere near that power from the 912 engine will cost you oddles.

Was that scratch built? Or £6.7k with a good donor engine.

I'd go down the VW route that way you can spank its arse without worrying too much about breaking something which potentially then breaks your wallet.

selling for around £1000 - £1500 i think at the mo for a complete NOS kit so not too bad compared to the engine rebuild list! agreed though, find someone with a nice vw engine thats all ready to drop in and save 1/2 the money and 3/4 the stress if you break it ;)

Although Judson are retro and very, very cool they don't really bump the power up much do they?

i think it depends more on the carb and the drive pulleys than the s/c itself with the judson kits; max they advertised was +40bhp however i think most of the beetle/karmann/bus kits were +30bhp.. while thats not masses of extra power you will get a decent torque hike aswell, so its probably more bang for buck than spending 2k going the n/a route?..

The only problem with the Judson and other period s/c kits is the efficiency of the s/c. you could over-drive it for more power but i think the leakage is such that the benefits soon disappear; you really need to fit them and use as-is, and love them for the retro-hunk of tuning kit they are 8)
I really love the idea as they're kind of period and potentially something that might have been fitted since the car was new(ish). Only problem is they seem to be coming into fashion a bit with the whole retro-car scene which means prices are up and availability is down.. they are still out there though and i reckon the result would be worth the time spent hunting for and fitting one

now for something completely different!..

if you're using the car day to day (may have interpreted your initial post incorrectly) have you considered megasquirt or similar fuel inj? MFI could give you a bit more flexibility and reliability for day to day, plus a bit of a power hike ontop

b :)
