For those that don't have iTunes installed the app is written and sold by a certain Jeff Maynard, an ex-director of Porsche Club GB and famous for being ousted for an apparent conflict of interests.

We were playing with the fart noise generator app (iFart) down the pub last night, Havent laughed that hard in a long time!

in that case send me a PM and I will give you a promo code for a free copy of PorscheArchive for the iPhone (I would not want you deprived just because you don't like me - even though you seem reluctant to explain why???)

its basically the same information (www.porschearchive.com is mine as well) although the iPhone app includes a VIN Decoder and does not need an Internet connection; glad you find the database useful...

Its a shame that the VIN decoder doesnt work for the pre-1980 cars.

That is namely the interest for a lot of DDK-ers and aircooled porsche aficionado's.

An idea for a tweak perhaps?

Best regards,

Pre 1980 Porsches did not use the standard 17 character VIN unfortunately...
If anyone has the pre-1980 algorithm I will happily build it in to the app

Hi Jeff,

There broadly *isn't* an algorithm when you go back past 1968 due to so many cross relations, although the number ranges are given by Barth / Boschen so could be looked up. For 1968 it was 118xxxxx and for 1969, 119xxxxx (model type was not identifiable from memory). Beyond this, everyone correct me but from memory, from 1970 through 1973 (don't know about anything beyond that :lol:):

Format: 911 ymb xxxx

911 (obvious really :roll:)

y = model year where:
0 = 1970
1 = 1971
2 = 1972
3 = 1973

m = model type
1 = 'T' US spec
2 = 'E'
3 = 'S'
4 = (was this ever used??)
5 = 'T' ROW
6 = 'RS'

Body type:
0 = coupe
1 = targa

If you are in - or know someone in - Italy, buy one there. The Italian Govt would not allow an exclusive deal (like 02 have) so all iPhones are effectively unlocked. I bought one through a friend, swapped in a 3G SiM and it works an absolute treat. NO issues with Itunes, software updates or "hacking" a UK phone.

Wife has it on her work account. If she changes job (heaven forfend), she hands the SIM back and off she goes.

Got told today that iPhone is going to be sold on other networks from Oct this year in UK....no idea how reliable this info is, however. Anyone from that game able to confirm or not?
