Many of you may remember the 912 Register trip to AJP Engineering way back in 2003, well as you may know Andy now runs Maxted Page & Prill in Essex. Andy will not need much in the way of an introduction to many but for those who don't know he is one of, if not the 912/356 Guru's in the UK, if not the world. He is also a renowned racer on the world Classic circuit (Classic Le Mans winner, Carrera Panamericana etc) There is not much he does not know about our cars. So a day at MP&P will be enlightening to say the least.

The day will be an informal get together with a chance to ask questions and listen to Andy talk Porsches, Racing and Life. Be prepared to make notes! ;) Lunch will be provided.

There will be some amazing cars on display, anyone who has been to Maxted Page, MP&P's sister company, will know it's a veritable Racing and Porsche Museum. Worth a trip alone to see the cars let alone hear Andy wax lyrical.

It will be a charity event.
Andy is a keen supporter of a Childrens Hospital in Guatemala who look after children with cerebral palsy. The Fundacion Albergue Hermano Pedro will receive 100% of your ticket price of £10. It really is a great cause so if you can afford to give more please feel free.

Booking
It's sure to be busy as we have limited places, so first come first served.
Please send your payment via PayPal to:
info @ 912register . co . uk (no spaces) Please don't send payment to Andy or the Hospital, I'll never keep track of what's going on :)
Please make sure you include your name and address AND email, also your DDK username
Details of how to get there will NOT be published on the www, I will email directions nearer the time, Mark (912UK) is organising a Hotel (see further down in this thread).

Cheers
Gavin

Six degrees of separation

Enjoying a pint in a Cheltenham pub while on the Norwich Union Classic in 1988, my friend Keith Mainland and I, discussed what other events we would like to do in the future. At the end of a long list of seemingly impossible dreams we entered the world of fantasy in expressing our desire to do the legendary and recently revived La Carrera Panamericana. This event, more than most, appealed to me due to its association with Porsche.

A chance meeting in 1998 with Richard Clark raised the possibility of doing the race. After buying and preparing a Porsche 356 we scratched our heads on what colour it should be painted. At home I had a model of one of the Guatemala 356 team cars from the 1953 race. When I showed it to Richard the decision was made to paint the car in the original race livery.

Fast forward to 2008…Richard and I have just completed our ninth Carrera Panamericana (Keith crewed for us on eight of them). Along this incredible journey and the many unforgettable experiences we have had, Keith married Angelica Fuentes, Mexico’s famous female Carrera competitor. We won the 2 litre Sport Menor class in 2004 – the 50th anniversary of Porsche’s first win (it’s first in a World Championship event). We won the class again in 2007 and 2008 so we have now christened the car the ‘Anniversary Car’ because 2007 was the 20th anniversary of the event and 2008 was Porsche’s 60th anniversary. We have high hopes for 2009 as it will be our 10th anniversary!

To cap it all we managed to find and purchase Manfredo Lippman’s 356 Guatemala team car from 1953. We now count Manfredo and his wife Olga as personal friends. After the 2007 race we went to see Manfredo in Guatemala and discovered the Albergue Hermano Pedro (see below). Richard and I were so moved by what we saw there that we are continuing racing and do our best to raise money for the Guatemalan children of the Albergue. Seeing the children it cares for really makes you realise how lucky we are to be fit and able to enjoy life – something it is easy to take for granted.

Albergue Hermano Pedro

The Albergue Hermano Pedro is a private, not for profit organisation that gives a home and healthcare for eighty children with extreme cerebral palsy. It is a permanent shelter and provides specialist medical, nursing and dental care. Most importantly, it provides the children with a loving home without which most would have died long ago.

It has 53 full-time staff including a full time doctor, three physiotherapists and a part time dentist. It is governed by a board of Trustees and its founder and President, Olga Lippman.

The annual cost of keeping the home open is $600,000, with funding coming from corporate and individual donations, social events and sales of donated art. A large part of the funding is personal donations made by the Lippman family. The charity is very well run and independently audited and all donations made go directly to funding the care for the children, many of whom have been abandoned by families too poor to care for them and bring up a handicapped child. Without the Albergue many would undoubtedly be living in appalling conditions, or dead.

All of the money raised at the Winter Warmer will go directly to the Albergue. Maxted-Page and Prill will provide lunch and refreshments and there will be a raffle on the day with some interesting prizes.

£20 sent for Caroline and I

Considering I'm in that line up above it would be rude not to do it again! Is it really over 5 years ago? Good god!

There's an outside chance we may be in warmer climes at the end of February but if we are I'll let you know and the donation can stand.

Thanks - looking forward to it.

Paypal sent for myself and another Caroline lol

Started my 912 rebuild recently, who knows if it'll be finished by then! Either way I've enjoyed trips to AJP to get parts and machine work. Always something interesting to see and Andy's enthusiasm is positively infectious.

Rebuild pics to follow in another thread ;)
