Hi guys,

I brought over from the US a 914-6 upgrade earlier this year and thought it's about time to get it sorted.

It doesn't have a rear silencer on the exhaust so as you can imagine it's very, very loud and very, very illegal (originally built as a dual track/road car). However it seems to have short headers as per a 911 so I can't just bung a silencer on the back. I would be grateful for any advice on what sort of silencer to fit or will I have to replace the lot incl headers?

Any advice and/or details of suppliers (or anyone else) who could provide the parts, would be gratefully received.

Rich can advise you and in turn fabricate something to meet your requirements.

Bootsy got there before me. Doubt there is anything off the shefl that would work so a modified item or custom looks like your only options.

Bet that sounds good though.

I didn't honestly think the 911 headers would fit, i wonder if under the wrap they have been cut and re-welded. Nothing stock will fit unless you want to stump up for some burcsh headers, which are fairly inexpensive, then you can fit a stock 911 back box.

Richard (Turbo Thomas) fixed me up too, really good S/S set-up now, makes the best noise (though very civilised) and is proven to be most efficient. He'll provide you with just what you want, is a good bloke too, even though he did his best to set fire to Yeller!! AA

Thanks for the advice chaps, it looks like it's worth giving Rich a ring at Turbothomas. Pity they are miles away as the car isn't legal yet I might have to bite the bullet and renew it all?

I would get a standard 911 silencer (early 2in, 1 out, or 2 in 2 out - stainless ones are slightly louder for some reason but still legal for all track days) - mount it to the 'box using a standard 914 mount. Cut up two old 911 silencers for the flanges (sure someone on here can help you) and simply make up the difference with suitable 1"5/8 tube - job done. Use your headers, legal sound, and will cost you little more than the silencer.

I sourced a pair of 1 5/8 headers from the States and mated them to a standard early 911 rear silencer.

I have a couple of new flanges from laser cut mild steel if you need them.

My first thought was to go with a normal 911 box with a joining piece in-between, but I wasn't sure if I could get the flanges easily.

Ady, I'll take up your offer of the pair you have please, so if you want to pm me how much plus postage, I'll happily pay by whatever method is convenient for you (cheque, bank transfer, paypal??). If any one else could oblige with another pair that would be great.

I'm now looking for a normal 911 back box!

Do you have any pictures of your setup Abash and are you still running with heat exchangers?
