New U.S. Vendor

Post by prestigeclassics »

I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. My name is Chuck Eiler and I am the president of Prestige Classics, Inc. located in Houston, Texas. We are putting the final touches on a project that has taken over a year to complete. We are offering a reproduction of the 1955 550 Spyder. As you will see, this is no ordinary Spyder replica, this is a true reproduction of the original car. If you have a spare 4-cam in your garage you can drop it right in! lol We would love to hear comments from our European experts regarding this car. Feel free to email us, or comment on this board. We will check in periodically. Once again, thanks for your time.

Many thanks for introducing your project. Having looked at the site you seem to have a great product there. I'm sure some of out replica fans will comment.

- & that's by an experienced Factory-trained technician...

...the cam drive is by means of 9 shafts, 14 bevel gears & 2 spur wheels !

From the (roller bearing) crank, the drive goes via spur gears to a half-speed shaft (which also turns the oil pump) & is divided by bevel gear sets/layshafts to turn the exhaust camshafts. Further shafts go up to the inlet cams which in turn drive the twin distributors.

This system was common on 12 cylinder engines where shaft drive was very smooth but with only 2 lobes per cam in the Type 547 engine the uneven motion quickly ruined the coupling between the cam & distributor - hence the change to crank-driven distributors in later versions of the engine.
