Note new Avatar & wheel arches

Post by abash914 »

At last! The AA has a proper pic of his car!! Impressed? After all it's only taken, what 12 months or so!! :P

Since this pic was taken (before we left for last weekend's run) Yeller has now got a new (metal!!) off-side wheel arch - the nearside wasn't so full of P38, so we've left it pretty much alone, just a bit of lipping done. The wing and arch is being painted the AA yellow today, but now we've got rid of the filler on the right hand corner, the reduced weight will give us a distinct advantage in left hand bends. There won't be nearly so much understeer....

Next week a session on the rollers and we're about ready!! Wey hey!! I'll let you know if we get anywhere near 100 bhp. Do any other chaps with a 4 cyl 2 ltr know their outputs? Or is this classified info?? Don't want to start a bragging war, but it might be interesting to compare.....

Better go and lie down now.

I've no idea what the output of mine is but I think I might be finding out soon. I joined the R32 owner club a while back to get some information. A local group are doing a RR session in a few weeks and asked if I fancied it. To be honest I've no interest in the output of the R32 but said I'd like to bring the 914 down. No date set yet but I'll post the results for a laugh after.

No big tweeks in the engine compartment (yet..). I have a 2 ltr with Weber 36 IDFs (suspected 2 B from an Alfasud (??) which is the only bit of Yeller we haven't yet touched. What I hope to do over the winter is to rebuild the mill and go up to 44s, but whether to go further than 2056 in the capacity stakes is something to ponder....
The discussion on 4s vs 6s elsewhere on DDK is of great interest at the moment, I only want something torquey for road use - and I'd rather not get too close to the stress limits if I can avoid it....
The big visual tweek is 16x7" Fuchs all round. Hit a ramp last weekend and found out we'd not flared the front arches quite enough!! But like Tom, I prefer the non-big arch look.
It'd be great to have 160 bhp shoving you along, but I don't want to leave trails of oil on the road or to have to keep re-tuning it every other week.
I like something that can keep up with the others, is true to the original spirit and (most of all)doesn't demand that everything else on the car be uprated to cope, I suppose!

Bhp on rolling roads can vary greatly depending where you take it. Some flatter to deceive..........
For what it's worth (!), I've had a couple of 2.1 type 4 engines. One in my old 914, based on the standard 1.7, but with a hotter cam and twin SuperVee Solexes, which went really well - beat several 911's round Goodwood, and didnt give any trouble. The other was in our old Bay window Westie, that was to the same sort of spec, but on standard 1.8 single choke Solexes. That towed the hillclimb 911 to meetings all over the UK, including up to Harewood and Craigantlet in Belfast. Not only the car, spares and tools, but 3 adults, 3 kids, a Springer Spaniel, and all the food and clutter that goes with them! After the Camper succumbed to the tin worm, I sold the engine to a guy who wanted it for his trike...............
So - properly built and not too extreme, absolutely nothing wrong with a good Type4!

Cheers

Well Done Andrew!
I look forward to hearing the power output.
I think you are rather brave telling us about the RR in advance. What is it's a really embarrassing 70bhp.....

You'll feel my pain, Jon.
And plans will then be laid for a conversion - full house 3.6 ltr 6.....
On the other hand, just had the builder round to look at a conversion on the ground floor of the house and now Tina's got the wind in her sails. At least I know that in pig order that Yeller can just keep Tom in sight - so once properly tuned, we should get to see his back bumper more.

Far safer to do four at a time than four separate overtaking manoeuvres surely ?
