Hi Richard

Can't really say a brand, most brands make good, mid range and basic oils, a basic oil from a reputable company could be better for the car than a top of the range one from a budget company.

If you want the best for it, I'd go for something like the Motul Gear 300 or Redline MT90, but Millers Classic 80w-90 or Shell Spirax G would also be fine

Hi Mark

What sort of condition is the engine in? Does it burn much oil? Has it been rebuilt?

Hi Oil man ,

Just bought a 79 911sc , 160,000m had a top end rebuild about 50,000 miles ago in 1992, engine seems strong no smoke , but a few small leaks. I was supplied with 1 litre Elf competition st 10 w 40 for top up, but realy I would like to change oil and start again. The car is just for road use but do like a good blast out! which oil do you think? Limmited to 3000m per year and mostly summmer use so I hopping to just change just once each year .BTW if you could recomend an oil for a rebuilt engine also as planning a major rebuild this winter. A couple of choices with budget in mind for the second choice would be great.

Thanks Henry

You've just opened the biggest can of worms in the car world with this question as it will start a huge trail of opinion on what is best. So I'll start. I've used Castrol Magnatec semi-synthetic in mine since I bought it 14 years. Euro car parts and Halfords often have special offers and it is without doubt the best oil to use in an SC.. ANything else will cause it to blow up..........

Tim

several times you have suggesting a 10-50w or 15-50w for weekend use in older engines, however which of the two is better?

Thanks

Hi Oilman,

A few questions if I may :-

What engine oil grade, mineral or semi/full synthetic is recommended for pre 73 911, road use, engine has 50k miles since rebuild.

As above but for a 1985 32 Carrera 30 k miles since rebuild ?

Will I do harm to an engine / or is it bad practice / will it mix etc, if I top up an engine which has a mineral oil with semi or full synthetic and vice versa?

I notice that I had lots of oil leaks on the Pre 73 911 , when I used 15/40 Oil, and switched back to 20/50 and the thicker oil helped reduce leaks.
Rds,
Jasper

I need to top up the oil in my 1966 rally prepped 911. It has a 65 engine with S cams, Webers and oil cooler.

I have 2 unopened cans of (expensive) Motul Competition 300V 15W50 - will this be ok?

In the short term the car will only have light use as I have to address various things before it gets used again in anger.

Thanks
