These older cars are recommended 15w-50 or 20w-50.
I would personally look for a decent 15w-50 or 10w-50 to give lower wear from cold start. There are big differences in the cold crank viscosities 10w,15w and 20w and therefore the rate of flow from cold.
As illustrated here
Grade................................0degC...............................100degC
10w-50...............................1034..................................18cst
15w-50...............................1535..................................18cst
20w-50...............................2300..................................18cst
These oils all have the same viscosity when hot (measured at 100degC) 18cst so no difference because they are all SAE50's, it's the cold start that makes the difference.
Hope this helps, see I might know a thing or two about oil!
Question
I'm curious about the green colour of the Porsche in your sig as my father had a (911s Targa?) in the early 70's which was that colour and I have never seen it since, it's a stunning green.......what is it called?
Cheers

Hi oliman. What do you recommend for a 2.4 which will be going to CLM in July. Generally used for quick road work. Are you offering any discounts on your oils at the moment.
Thanks
Matt

Hi oilman, it's a 72 engine in a 70 car. Let me know what deals you have inc postage prices, it may be a little late though as I want to change the oil this weekend.

Hi Oilman,
I have a couple for you - I have a 1972 911 2.4TE, that is a California spec mechanical injection 2.4 making 150bhp (Woo!). I do a couple of thousand miles a year, using it for relatively short journeys in the summer, not driving massively hard, but do encounter a bit of traffic. Which oil would you recommend, and do you do a filter to suit (the '72 has a different oil tank to other years)?
If you'll allow a two wheeled question, I have just picked up a 2006 BMW R1200GS with less than 4000 miles on the clock. BMW recommend a SF grade 20/50 mineral oil until it is beyond 6000 miles, but I've struggled to find anything more modern than a SE oil locally. Do you do an SF oil, or does it not make that much difference? The bike doesn't have a cat by the way, though it was fitted with one as standard.
Cheers, Jon
