Thanks for the nice comments chaps.
Hard to believe autoclassica was 12 years ago Dougie and, yes, the yellow 2.4S is ‘alright’ I suppose.
Hardly in the mountains Gary but here a final shot for now with the obligatory 3/4 view for Andy.

Raymond,
I think we are all champing at the bit to get out. Could we do a social distancing meet up with a few guys? Please bring the rubystone. Can’t get that car out of my head. LookIng forward to more normal times. Hope to see you soon.

Ps. Still can’t find a guy who is a genius with fibreglass!

So, despite your kind comments about my lockdown cleaning I decided it was time that the RS deserved a treat. During 55000 kilometers I have always looked after the cleaning and polishing myself with the only professional refurbishment coming by way of the Fuchs wheels. Never in 17 years has the paintwork been given a proper detail. I’ve never been convinced by the apparent large mushrooming of ‘Detailers’ appearing all over the place and just how ‘expert’ or ‘experienced’ they are and who has good references and more importantly those who might have worked with almost 50 year old paint. Most detailers seem to progress their online advertising with many pictures of modern Ferrari’s, McLaren’s and the like. It was time to turn to an expert so I got in contact with someone who knows about these things and who I trust. He pointed me in the right direction and an appointment was made with Brian.
Apart from discussing the detailing process I wanted to find out the depth of the paint all over the car and Brian was extremely positive about the whole process, even wanting to know the history of the car to better understand the black/chartreuse situation. He was even keen to see the YouTube video of the 73 factory painting process which of course was non robotic. It also helped that he had worked on one or two other early 911’s and he told me he is soon to do his first 356. He also took onboard that I like patina to show and not all showroom perfection. All sounded good to me so I left the car with him for three days and the results were stunning. I can’t thank him enough for his careful work.

And thank you Brian for doing an amazing job.

On collection, without a swirl mark in sight but with all the patina retained, Brian and I discussed the paint depth.
In the knowledge that the early 70’s factory paint was nominally between 125 and 175 microns it was obvious that the whole RS has at least twice that depth on each and every panel with readings taken in nine different places and averaged. We concluded that the RS could not possibly have been bare metaled six months after birth but black painted over the chartreuse (which I had always suspected). So, somewhere under the whole car (including the ducktail which I was never certain about) there is factory chartreuse paint. Brian also concluded that the black is very hard paint because his pads did not become clogged with top coat paint very easily (unlike some ‘moderns’ he could mention) and it was also fairly evenly applied over the whole car except for a few trailing edges. He gave me a nice print out of all the measurements and a promised video of the whole detailing process.
All in all I found the whole experience way better than I expected. So much so that I’ve booked the S in for the same treatment.

I think it’s so nice when you find people who love their job, listen to your requirements and do not call you until they are 100% happy with their work.
The communication over the three days was excellent (with some teaser photos) and the confidence this gives you means a guy will get repeat business and recommendations without the need to advertise.

Regards
Mike

Looks stunning mike ... now let’s it get it out on one of our old road trips and get it dirty again ;)

Interesting about the paint though. At least you know those Italians did a decent job back in 74

Thanks James, you know this is no cosseted garage queen and a road trip is always on the cards. If it gets dirty, chipped or scratched I now know where to take it. Only downside is I now need to learn how to ‘posh wash’ as you call it.

Mike

Looks wonderful Mike, one day you’ll be tempted to leave it with Brian for a few more days and some heavy compound to find the Chartreuse
