Finally Going Back together

Post by johnM »

Looks like the engine is finally going back together, trying to make the track day at oulton park on the 30th.

New oil pump, new intergear new barrel and pistons new exhaust valves reconditioned fan and a general tidy up and a few little tricks to make the old girl go a little better.

Looks sweet john,

was the windage work done by hand (die ground) or machine (milled). Also nice black finish how did you achieve it?

Hi

The fan is a dark grey and was done with I think a chromate treatment, the boatailing is done by hand (a very experienced one, which clearly isn’t mine)

Can vouch for the 'boat - tailing' being a painstaking job - I've had blisters to prove it.......

Hi Jamie

Boat tailing is working the crank journals that face the underside of the pistons, air is squeezed through the journals as the piston moves back and forth, standard crankcases just have a flat journal, and Porsche rounded these to allow the air to move around inside the crankcase more easily and drilled some holes again to aid the movement of air. This allows the engine to spin more freely.
