I've just acquired a door mirror for my LHD 912 (it currently has none).

Simple (or stupid?) question: what side should I put it?

It would have gone on the left door in it's original Italian home, but over here it will be more useful on the right.

Thoughts?

Talking of mirrors, does anyone know how to take the glass out of an original door mirror on a '67 912? The mirrored backing is corroded and I'd like to just replace it in what is still a good body.

forgot to mention, beleive me you'll find it more useful on the drivers side. If you use it for the daily commute I'd be tempted to have one of both side just out of sensibility, but hey we all drive old Porsche so we can't be that sensible else we'd be on a bicycle or train, apparently

Helen - it doesn't matter whether you are short - I can't even see the door mirror on the passenger side on my '12 (and it is mounted in the correct place) - that's the problem with small durant mirrors - but they do look very pretty!

Looks like you have a Durant mirror from the photos i've seen on here? If so, there should be a black plastic retaining ring between the mirror glass and the edge of the housing. This should prise out (inevitably breaking the mirror you're levering against) and the mirror should follow.

While we're on the topic of 'Durants', count me as no great fan.
I've been through quite a few of those mirrors and they're useless.
I'm on my fourth in one year.
The originals are great but you can't get 'em. Porsche quoted me over £250 for one. And that's probably still a later copy.
Even the original I managed to get broke (at the fixing bolt).
The repros are supposedly OEM but they are not. There are cheap, thin and don't adjust enough. Each of mine broke (at the joint). They look the part but you can't see anything useful out of them. Well, I can't.
If a repro is £60- £75-ish then an unblemished original is worth good money in my book.
Anyone got an unbroken original for sale?

PS. My next car will have gennie Talbot Spun Aluminium 'Berlins' (the original bullet racing mirrors).
Maybe then I can see where I've been (or whose trying to get past me on track)

Absolutely no problem at all, did mine in about 10 minutes.



Maybe mine's a repro and they're easier to do, or maybe the glass had been replaced in the past.

Anywhooo, if the alternative is to replace the entire mirror, he hasn't got much to lose.....

the later type durants look easier to operate on to me.

Martin's will be the small early type

If you put it on the drivers side you will have a lovely view of ladies on the pavement across the road.

If you put it on the passenger side you won't even see the mirror.

have to ask - is it a left hand mirror or a right hand one ?

I too had the same problem with the Durant Repros' - complete waste of money and they never turn in enough to be of any use - and are also lighter than the original and hence vibrate at speed.
Buy yourself an original from Porsche for £120 - money well spent and no hassle for years!!
