Seemingly overnight, I am getting a crunching when I try to put my '67 912 in first, or reverse gear. Rest of the changes are okay, and a lot of the time I can manage to get first or reverse quietly if I really slam my foot down before putting into gear.

Am I correct in thinking/hoping that simply adjusting the clutch pedal will help this? If so, do I just need to adjust the nut on the threaded cable/rod that is visible through the inspection hole in the central tunnel to the right of the pedal assembly?

I would start by checking or adjusting free play at the cable end underneath the car first, these are taken from the drivers manual, I hope they help



after that then make the pedal travel adjustment at the front

Thanks for those - only issue is that my car doesn't seem to have the pedal stop plate that the manuals refer to - at the moment it stops when the nut on the bottom of the pedal hits the floor!

aah in which case I would do as you first said, try adjusting the cable up a 1 or 1.5 turns at a time at the clevis where it connects to to pedal end and see how it goes.

Pull the pedal right back on itself and fit something between it and the floor (to take up the cable slack) unclip the clevis through the hole and turn it back on the cable said no. of turns at a time, you don't want it too tight if you've got no pedal board as the cable could snap

like i say try it 1 or 1.5 turns at a time until you get a crunch free 1st/reverse change

it a bugger of an area to get your fingers into that I have been there many times

Thanks Darren, I'll give it a go this weekend - definitely sounds like a bank holiday job to me!

Decided to attack the clutch cable from the easier end (under the car) - a turn and a half and I've now got a quiet gear change! I need to get the car up to proper temperature and then check it again, but now I know it's so easy it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

I am however a bit confused as to why I am missing the pedal stop. According the diagram in the manual, the clutch pedal should go through another floor panel (to which the stop plate is attached), but mine has none of that and the elbow of the clutch pedal just stops when it hits the floor. Anyone else got a pic of their 1967 LHD 912 that I can check mine against?

the part I think you might be missing is the wooden pedal/floorboard, you can buy ABS or aluminuim replacement ones from Pelican Parts in the US.

Or you could put up a wanted for an origianal wood one, difficult to find in nice shape as most have broken or rotted away, but you never know there are plenty of parts hoarders around here.

Ah - yet another part that I discover is missing from my car! Thanks Darren - for that price I reckon I could make one if I can get one to copy. Then I can put an adjuster onto the board to limit pedal travel as it should be.

There are 2 compoments on the pedal board, one to limit clutch pedal travel and one to limit accelerator pedal travel... just to confuse you even more

Why would you want to limit accelerator pedal travel?!

So is there a similar board on the passenger side? Of course, mine is a LHD car...
