Novice question????

I was checking out a 912 the other day and ended up being puzzled by the heater system (sad isn't it?).

In my distant past I ran loads of beetles and they all had tubes that run off the fan shroud that pushed air through the heat exchangers and then into the cabin.

On the 912 I looked at there were no tubes off the fan shroud, but there were two holes in the engine sheetmetal that coincided with two apertures on the heat exchangers. How does the 912 heating system work? Were there a load of bits missing, or was it some kind of bodge-up?

I really should get out more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

See those big holes? They are the heat exchanger outlets...

KS, thanks for the geographic review!!! How's Cornwall?

Evil J, thanks for the piccy, my question is about t'other end of heat exchangers/ the fan shroud, any chance of a picture of that end? PS nice clean engine (and pick-up bed)!

don't 912/356 motors use the early VW fan housing with the heater outlets blocked off?

Do you mean these bits

Are we talking about the two pipes that run up to the rear screen demisters? You are quite welcome to come and look at mine I am in luton.

Those pipes from memory where a factory atempt to put hot air on the carbs to stop icing in the carbs..

The ones in Gav's pictures are the heat exchangers there should be orange pipe connecting these to the car..

The ones I was taking about with the carbs ( above top ) have nothing added to them

the ones in Niges pics I have seen before and they seam to be after market tinkering..

Correct me if I am wrong but that is how I have always undestood it..

On James's pic itme 27 and 28 and 42 all link up and the idea was that the heat from the exchanger would rise and the carb would suck in warm air to make sure it didn't ice up..

Great BUT!! the one thing these engines don't want it to be sucking up great amount of warm air.. builds up temp and can lead to seizing...
Extream for a 912 more like a single grill 356.

Any way the engine will draw in the easy air the warm air over cold air.

Hence why it's so important to have ALL your tin ware in place ( says he running car with the fuel tin missing ops. Job for the summer. So next time you look at a Kit speedster check out how many have tin ware ??? I bet you find nearly ALL have none.. this NOT a good thing..Esp on a single grill car which they are.. engine will keep drawing the warm air in ALL the time over the cool air from the grill...

in answer to your question

So for your average UK temp... nothing...

Driving in Canada or in the hills of Ca might help you out abit but not much..
