914-6 oil tank holes

Post by fourteener »

Paul Herbert kindly lent me his hole punches to cut my oil tank apertures.
They are the Q-max sort and work brilliantly (and a lot more quietly) than hole saws and don't leave nasty burrs.
Just mark out the hole centres using the school boy method of a set of compasses.

then drill pilot hole for punch

As the centre bolt is tightened the two cutting halves of the punches are drawn together slicing a perfect hole

The oil filter hole is massive so the only thing large enough is a hole saw

The only hole without a stamped guide for location is the scavenge line. I made a template and drilled a hole. I'm glad I did a test fitting first before the final cut because I was 3/4" out :?

And then with the tank installed everything is nice and central

Now when the hell hole is welded up I can get the engine bay painted in blut orange...

Its a lot easier without the engine in - we cut the holes for my tank earlier this week but with the engine in place.

did you use a factory tank by the way?

Excellent work (& photos) - are there any more details about the car's eventual spec ?

I was just thinking that soon there will be more 6 cylinder '14s on the road here in the UK than 4's!

Nothing really exciting Andy, engine-wise it'll be a 2.4T, suspension is 911S up front with adj konis all round. Brakes it's 964 Brembo 4 pots up front at I'm hoping the six going in will make it a nice fun car.

Hi James,

great photos, will be a useful reference when I get going with mine. Car looks great in it's new paint.

By the way, does anyone have an M10 tap I could kindly borrow. I need to clean up some female threads. I will obviously offer some beer tokens by way of thankyou!

kind regards
Rob

Rob sounds to me like a like good excuse to invest in a set of metric taps + dies -If you buy a good set you might get a thread file too.
