hi guys

im getting to that point where its time for a project. (you know the feeling)

Well i have been thinking of building a high spec motor (type 1)

what im asking here is really is Nige were are you? can i drop a t1 motor onto the gear box in the 912e?

or should i just forget the idea and build one for bug?

this would be a engine for the weekend, drop it in take it to santa pod and have a blast. drop the old engine in for the everyday driving.

why not just build a hot type4?

If you allready have a decent type4 lump in the car it will be much easier to bulid & fit a monster fire breathing type 4 lump.

Admittedly a type4 can cost a bit more than a warm type1, but once you start buying exotic type1 bits a type1 can cost the same as really strong / powerful type4

as your 912E has the type4 motor fitted anyway I would definatly go the hot type4 route.

Just go and look at all the 'german look' beetles etc .. they are all running type4 motors.

Is it deffo a turbo motor you want? Personally I prefer the characteristics of a N/A motor. A well built N/A type4 will get good power & outlast a similar powered 'rev hungry' type1

Keith, Marty's car is looking very cool 8)

well im not set on a turbo motor.

Its just the age old, turbo = more power for less £££ and as its only for drag racing its not a every day motor so im not worried about turbo lag around bends :x

if i went down N/A engine how big we talkin to get the kind of power thats going to shift a 912e down the strip?

i have the kind of power i want in mind, may not be the most powerful engine in the world but you know this will be my first hot engine,

i have built 1300 1641 bug engines to standard spec. so i dont want to go to crazy

You need to call KS and I 's fav type 4 man Pete at Funkunblitz ( or how ever you spell it. ) he can build some monster engines.. and is a nice chap to talk to local to me and has made me thing about a type 4 big motor in the future.. as it's cheaper.

what about supercharging?

Anyhow I start with a different motor if I were you.

As far as I know the type 4 2.0l crank would be the weak point for big hp as the journals are smaller to give the extra throw and it would most definately need forged pistons rather than the Keith Black jobbies it already has. Also the heads would need alot of work to make strong enough.

I'd give Simon a call, he built the engine, he's also built turbo'd type 1s and 4s. I'll pm you his number. He's defo worth a call and pretty local to you and familiar with the car.

As for fitting a type 1 in it, you'd have to find a clutch and flywheel setup that would work. The type 4 flywheel cannot be swapped onto a type 1 so you can't swap them over.

Just make sure you find the right person/builder it took me one bad experience to get the engine right.

Also we need to arrange the EFI hand over, parts of that could be used for a decent EFI/turbo combo.

cheers Nige

i wouldnt want to touch the motor thats in the car at the min as well you put alot of time and money into and as 912uk said its like new.

its strong and runs well so im not going to mess with it.

this motor is just a project and a bit of fun. be nice to drag it. i will give the guy a call mate cheers.

first off tho i need to give turbo thomas a call and get some new pipes or fix up the old heat exchangers.

then talk about the pipe work for my turbo lol

i was only ok-ing the idea with my wife yesterday to go sort the exchangers lol

i woundered why my ears were burning.

thanks tho i will not hide from the fact i dont really know much about anything really when it comes to porsche's let alone moding them. thats why im sure it will take me 12months just to plan what i want to do.

i mean sure i have rebuilt type ones but only to standard spec.

this should be nice and taxing for me. but i will cheak out your thread i think i may have looked at it before
about always worth a look again.

Yup Ritchie is all too familiar with that car of yours Mark :)

I think the issues with turbo'ing type 4s is to do with the way the head seals to the barrels, but I think these kind of issues are in the past now.

I need to drop something off a TTs so perhaps we could meet there in a week or two and you can have the EFI bits and bobs. I'll most likely be in the Vectra though.
