71 914 hell hole

Post by porker914 »

I thought I would share with you the hell hole experience!!!

This started out as a small amount of rust that I saw from below prior to my MOT last month!!

A little background on the car first. It is a "restored" car from California, restored about 5 years ago and as i found the battery tray had been restored before!! with a new panel over the top of the rusty old one!!! so you will see from the photos and there are lots i had to cut out the new panel first before i could cut out the rust before welding in yet another set of new panels and fabricated ones to. following the welding the car door shuts have not moved thanks to bracing the doors before cutting any metal out.

Enjoy!!!

David

Scary Mary - so mine that 'doesn't look too bad' (to quote my Rustoration thread) is actually going to be diabolical.
Have I got a lot to learn !!

David, Where did you get the replacement engine shelf from and whats the pink primer + the black top coat that you painted on the bare metal?
Nice tidy job.

fourteener,
You can get the engine shelf from Pelican parts or Mittelmotor or if you are feeling flush from Roger Bray! I have bought 2 of these now and both came from Mittelmotor - but be aware that they are apparently only made by one man in the world so the wait can be a while as he makes a batch of them and they get distributed throughout all the above companies to be sold on.

The pink paint is a rust preventative paint applied once you have treated any rust. I applied it inside the longitudinal as once I repaired it you would never get inside again.

The black solution is a product that the army use and forget what its called but I bought it from my very good local automotive shop who supply locally to the army and it preps fresh bare metal allowing welding without painting it for up to 6 weeks. Basically allows bare metal to stay bare while you do any welding work then you paint straight over the top.

The weld-thru primer sounds like a good product.
I've used the UPOL weld thru before but didn't really like it and ended up stripping it all off because it was contaminating the weld (maybe the layer I sprayed was too thick) :| Is the black top coat POR15?
David, did you grind your welds flat or just leave them?

Fourteener,

I have been using U-pol weld thru primer for a while and find it ok and have had no weld problems . Would advise that prior to applying, you scotchbrite the area and then panel wipe and just give one coat or two thin coats. Oh and it says weld within 24 hours but I leave it longer sometimes and it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Hope this may hep

fourteener,
I only ground the welds where i needed to. I know some restorations ive seen on US forums seem to grind them flat but I prefer to leave as is where I can to leave as much metal in the joint and strength.

The whole job looks very daunting when you first start but as long as you are methodical and ensure you have taken measures to eliminate as much distortion as possible the whole job is not that bad.

The last one I did was much easier as it had never been welded before whereas this one had already had someone babdly try to repair it so was was made worse because I had to repair his crap first!
