Bert,
Not an expert, but budget is a massive factor.
The PCGB do what looks from my spectating to be a very good set of circuit and sprint / hilclimb series - take a look at their website.
The hcrc also looks a promising place, but for rallies.
Are you wanting to do circuit or road based - car setup quite different.
Do you want to be able to use it as a road car?
A car with FIA papers is as you point out more costly, so a non FIA car might be a better start leaving cash to campaign it with.
How about starting with some track days and tuition time.
Tuthills have a rally ready 1973 911 that is not costly - call and speak to Richard and say I sent you!
Let us know how you get on.
Bootsy - what about a racing section to the Forums?

I would like to do circuit based outings and would like to have a car I could ideally drive to and from the circuit- bit like the privateers of old. But probably in this day and age its getting difficult as there will be too many compromises to the vehicle I guess.
Anyhow, early days, first things first.
Best regards,

Woa, talking about taking the bulls with its horns.
Thanks Bootsy. Mwah mwah
I am just reading up on some quite basic stuff in performance driving manuals and the "porsche 911 performance handbook" to actually be familiar with the terminology. Its a different world. Nice.

Ever done a track day Bert or one of those driver experience courses ? A great place to start. I did the course in Golf GTI's ages ago at Mallory, got a real feel for it and most important, some basic training. Track days followed, but the basic concepts from the Mallory park course stand me well each time I go out. An awful lot of track dayers have no basic idea !
The 70's road sort looks to be a great series, with bonus points for driving your self to and from the event. How cool is that !
Otherwise, join your local motor club. Loughborough Car Club is good.
If you are not sure about taking your own car out on a track day, you can even hire cars. Or just buy a cheap one... Old 5 series ? 3 Series BMW ... I bought a Maserati Biturbo for £1200 for exactly that purpose... best of all, try it, have fun. Cheers

Yes, I did. First I had a day at the Porsche Driving experience way back in 1996 in order to explore the safety limits of the 911. We had at our disposal a 88 3.2 carrera and a yellow 993 carrera RS to which I blagged a ride. During an open day in 1999 I did Zolder a few laps in my own 2.7.impmad2000 wrote:Ever done a track day Bert or one of those driver experience courses ?
But there is a difference in learning to control the car and learning how to make the most out of any particular 911. I want now to get my teeth into the latter.
I was actually thinking of getting a non synchromesh car -any old banger-to use on a daily basis for a while to master heel and toe-ing and become smooth (well) with a non-synchro gearbox. Loads of start-stop driving on my commute to the hospital, and clear roads afterwards!

I learned to drive the Imp clutchless..Match the revs and the gears just drop in.. but then Imp gearboxes are cheap.Bertroex wrote: I was actually thinking of getting a non synchromesh car

I got carried away. Basically driving too fast and realised too late that on a mountainous sinuous road one can only drive as fast as one can see.Mick Cliff wrote:And I thought you'd explored those limits again, last August!
(I was looking so far forward (down the valley) that the sharp left hander caught me by surprise.)
But i'll choose that experience ANY time over a new 997. I did about 100 miles in the new 997 carrera S last friday, a friend just got it.
GOD WHAT A HATEFULL CAR.
As stupid thing trying to outsmart you. I hate it I hate it I hate it I hate it. And it was noise insulated, comfortable, no mix of castrol R and leather and sweat, it came with c-l-i-m-a-t-e c-o-n-t-r-o-l-. Honestly, you couldnt drive with the drivers window a bit down bc you would upset the climate. Ah, and you can wear contacts.
By contrast, I drive without carpets (when i'm alone) and am perfectly happy!
best regards,

Mogs - I also looked at possibly doing a few of these - what car do you have, and what prep. work have you done ? Are you doing 'rallies' or 'regularatory' ?moggy wrote:Come join us in the www.hrcr.co.uk I'm gonna do my first season (actually more like a splatering of which races I can fit in my diary) next year.
