Thought it would be a good idea to start up a topic that had a list of stuff in it of parts from VWs and 911/2 that we could use on 914s

This is a VERY good idea.
Front discs, calipers and pads are common with same aged VW Type 4s i.e. up to 72 & then 73 & beyond. Although these days I dunno which is more rare a T4 or a 914!
Front wheel bearings are VW Beetle post 68 or VW Golf rear up to at least MkII (same thing)
Rear wheel bearings are available from BSL (Bearing Supplies a national industrial chain) you'll need the SKF or whatever part number for them to cross refer.
If your CV joints aren't too tired you can use the outer of the 914/4 joint with the new inner of a Beetle CV joint. Beetle CV boots can be modified to fit, 914/4 has 2 dowels & 4 bolts where a bug has 6 bolts, just weld up one opposite pair of bolt holes.
A fair few interior parts are the same as a Beetle, window winder handles for instance.
Rear brake pads are the same as an Alfa but I'll have to look that exact model up, you just need to enlarge one of the fixing pin holes.
911 master cylinders fit & are an upgrade from 17mm bore to 19mm.
009 or 050 dizzy will work with twin dual carbs.
The heater blower is common with a T2 item but I'm not sure which.
914/4 wheel bolts for alloys are the same as VW Iltis.
When converting LHD headlamps to UK RHD style youcan use either funky Angel Eyes or el cheapo designed for (classic) Mini 7" sealed beam conversion units.

Does anyone know with regards to electrical parts what is the same as other VW parts.

Particularly after things like the switch gear in the steering column with wiper controls and dip main beam control is this the same as a beetle?

also the relays are they from 924 or beetle etc does anyone have a list I can have?

Im sure I bought a beetle wiper control for mine, I done it a few years back so cant rem exactly which one.
Infact I even think its got the beetle part number on your origonal, you will have to pull it apart to see.

914 rear wheel bearings same as early 911. Euro or GS&F can supply them.
Early 914 (>72) use 911 engine/gearbox mounts.
Clutch friction plate is same as camper 215mm (look for 6 spring)

I am sure rear wheel bearings are the same as front wheel bearings from an Audi 80.

Post 73 cars, indicator,wiper switch are (I believe) the same as a 1303 beetle (best check before you dive in).

Switch gear (hazards etc) are off a beetle as well.

911 engine front engine mounts can be used for 914 gearbox end mounts and are cheaper!

As always - the expensive bits that break are always the ones that are unique to the 914 - doh!

Could be worth setting up a seperate forum per model (914, 911) to stick this sort of info

If you own an early 914 ( pre- 73 ) the 911 engine-mounts work for both engine and gearbox mounts on your 914.

914/4 rear pads are (almost) the same size and shape as Alfa Romeo Alfetta 72-83, Giulietta 76-83, Alfa 6 Range 80-83
You do need fo enlarge one of the pin holes on each pad with a rat tail file

If you loose the steel insert for your front drop linkbushes and you have a spare front/rear bumper-mounting-dogbone you will find that the steel insert is the same. And vice versa

I just retro fitted 924 column switches to my 914 i.e. indicator and wiper stalks. Same fitting same plugs but the advantage is you can wire an electric washer pump to the spare terminal and have this operated off the stalk

If headlights fail to go up and/or down, and all usual electrical checks fail to produce results, there are some resistors hidden under a black plastic sheathing, as the wires enter the headlight motor. I found one had partially broken giving intermittent headlight lowering. To check, disconnect motor at multi connector, and put ohm-meter from connector pin to the soldered wire join on motor. If the ohms fluctuate chances are that the resisitor has failed.

Either solder in new resistor (sorry I couldn't read the value on mine), or at a push, bridge it with wire: the motor is still switched via the relay, so probably be O.K. at a push: better than no lights anyway

saab99 front wheel bearing is the same as 914 rear ,does anyone know what other brake pads fit the ,front type 4 pads are harder to get than 914's

On the rear - 1303 Beetle pads (front discs, obviously) do the job with the 'enlarge one hole' modification. Keeps it in the VAG family!
