Hi

I have just my first 356 back home (its been standing for about 8 years) and the rear offside brake drum is sticking.

Can anyone give some advice on how to unfreeze it.

Hello there.

If its stood for that long it definitely needs a full hydraulic rebuild.

Master and all six cylinders, new rubber lines and possibly steel lines too.

If you are lucky you may be able to hone out the rusty cylinders...or they may have already been lined with bronze or stainless if you were the seventh son of a seventh son..

Oh, sorry!

I just thought it was a bit draggy!

The time honoured method invloves the skilfull application of a BFH to the periphery of the drum, after unscrewing the little brass adjusters if you can reach them

Do not be surprised if the drum is not very healthy...

Had to do this yesterday!

Jack the offending side with the wheel off.
Spray WD40/brake cleaner/oven cleaner into hub through adjuster hole and let it marinade for an hour.
Slacken off adjusters.
Place metre+ length bar centrally across hub between studs (which are heavily taped up to avoid damaging threads) and apply force to longest end.
Try to only move an inch at a time.
I use my long-serving, extra length hub nut remover: Barry the B A S T A R D B A R
Then the other way and so on.
Cars been standing a few years but stuck hub came free in about ten mins without damage to studs.
Fair to say it needs new shoes though...
