912 Factory workshop manual

Post by aijf197 »

Does anyone know where you can get hold of one of these? I'd prefer to have one before I start putting my engine back together, and before I go near the gearbox.

Thanks

I have all the books you could need if you want to look though them before you buy them on line at least you can see what you are getting..

I hadn't seen that site before - thanks, although the manual is not as in depth as the one I've got.

That would be great Mark. I've got two 912 manuals and the Duane Spencer book, but the actual factory workshop manual seems rather elusive. Do you have this? I think it comes in a set of ring bound volumes.

I've got some original Porsche Mahle pistons and barrels (sorry  ) and I'm working on getting some solexes.

Since the engines out, it makes sense to get the gearbox sorted too I think. I'll probably defer to an expert on this though - the pictures in the manual look quite scary.

Hello, Alex.

It is combined into the two vloume 911 manual..

The gearbox is not too awful..tho' special tools do help a lot..

Is your four or five speed?

Any noticable problems?

Kind regards

It's a 5 speed. The syncro is poor on 1st and 2nd and there is wining when you ease off the accelerator in 4th and 5th (pinion bearing?)

I've had a gearbox place recomended to me (S G A Hamilton near Southampton) by my local garage. I phoned and they say they do loads of Porsche transaxles and it'll be about £130 for the labour for a rebuild. Sounds quite good to me, and I can concentrate on the engine.

I've taken the gearbox in. It's Solent Gearbox and Axles, Hamerton Garage. Hedge End actually. I was wrong about the price - it's £120 plus parts!! The guy had the confident air of someone who's been taking gearboxes apart for 30 years and he said he's done a few 901 tranaxles (either very quickly or for zero profit). Fingers crossed!

Mark - I'll get in touch this weekend. I've started cleaning up the heads - very very coked up.

The parts cost is the profit then..

It is true to say that most 901 bits have tripled in value over three years..

He may have a stock of good used parts..

I told him I'm on a tight budget and he's happy for me to get the parts from America. I'll see what he can get them for and then maybe go for Stoddard?
