For those that don't know the Targa Florio, here's the most fantastic computer simulation of a lap of the Targa Florio in a 908/3.
Beware though, one lap is 34 mins!
Come this October the car should be driving those roads!

But who will be behind the wheel ?
Any idea on when it will be seen for the first time here in the UK - any events planned ?
Attention to detail does not describe this Mike, and to think when I saw the car at the PCGB Classic Track Day at Silverstone (2007 ?), I thought 'wow, that is a lovely Martini themed 72S, it needs for nothing"

Now that, as they say, will be one of those moments in time!

First spray out goes on for a colour test, no matter how many spray out cards you do to look at the colour you've mixed, it's
not until you see it on the car against all the silver that you see the true effect. Obviously not a problem with the black, but
still need to see it on the car to sign off on the final positioning.
Beauty of using water based paint as we are, is that if we're not happy it wipes straight off. All the work you see here, the
masking and the paint has all came off and been redone a couple of times so far as we've not been happy with various
aspects of it.

Were the original painted on or were they decals?

happy with the position you mark it, pull off the positive mask and a negative one goes on in it's place ready for painting.
Getting the right angle of the MARTINI RACING and how it runs up the panel was difficult, there's a natural shadow line in the
quarter which effects it as well. Should have bought shares in masking tape given the amount we used trying to get it right!
Notice how the letter spacing of MARTINI and RACING are different, took me ages to figure out why, then I found the picture of
the team transporter and the penny dropped, the words sat on top of each other there, so were sized to the same length.
First paint to go down was the white for the roundel and the base for the Martini Belt.

Hey Mike - how about one the trucks to house it in as the next project??

Hi Mark, interesting debate this one. You would think that logos like the Dunlop one and the Bosch sparkplug which is a really great one would have
come as decals from the sponsoring company, but I have heard tell of cardboard masks being given to the teams for the mechanics to spray using
cans. Obviously as cars have been rebuilt over the years modern materials have been used and most are stickered up now.
Certainly last minute additions to cars at the circuit could well have been painted, roundels and race numbers where routinely painted on back in the
60's but sure about 70's, be interesting to know what the vinyl technology was back then.
As for this car, it's all in paint cos I like it!

don't know why you're laughing Viv, converted coach a bit big but how about the support truck, here's a couple of detail pics
from the model:
and here's one I've found, unbolt the back off the chassis, fabricate a box on and you're there. Got to be worth it just for the
wing mirrors alone!

I'd imagine it's the cutting technology of vinyl that would have been lacking back then, plotter cutters are relatively cheap these days and were probably not available back then along with large format printing.

Looking great Mike - will there be any type of clear lacquer/sealer applied over the water-based paint ?

Thanks Andy, the whole car apart from the roof and bumpers was flatted again before we started the artwork,
so when that's done a new glasurit lacquer coat will go over it all which will give us the final polished finish.
I did think a while ago about doing a matt or satin finish which I've always loved, but that's more an earlier era,
more like 550's and 904's

I haven't polished mine since it was painted - I think now you've said that I'll probably just rub it over with some fine wire wool ...

This has been such a cool car to follow and I think we are all so grateful to you Mike for sharing it with us.
Your dedication, attention to detail is something most of us will never achieve but your passion is something we all feel.
Member of the Year in the bag as far as I'm concerned, can't be a more fitting tribute after a 6 year thread about one car with so much detail and pictures shared. That is what DDK is about.
There should definitely be an 'unveiling' too....can't see a better reason for a mass DDK drive than this
Inspiring mate. Hope you are proud.

Who are you, and what have you done with Jason?
