Robster wrote: Jon - sounds like a carb issue to me. I would check that one of the idle jets aren't blocked with a bit of dirt. It doesn't take much for this to happen. The car will run on idle jets and transfers to main jets at @ 2500-3000 rpm so a blocked idle jet will cause rough running below this and then the car will pick up above 3000rpm. Just be careful that you re-check the ignition timing. Too advanced and it can cause some engine damage if left like it.

I am sure a quick clean of the idle jets will have it running sweetly again.

kind regards
Rob
Thanks Rob I hadn't thought of that
And yes I was deffo going to redo the timing.
Come to think of it I don't recall seeing a fuel filter in the line, did I miss it? perhaps I should add one.

Rob Is dead right about particles in the main/idle jets causing problems, I suffered from this quite often on the Dells I was running. Not having compressed air by the roadside I used to carry Q-tips to clean out the jets.
I put three filters inline and it seemed to cure it.

Hi Jon,

the fuel system has a large bosch fuel filter located just below the engine tin ware on the bulkhead (big grey canister) - at the battery side. Might be worth putting a couple of inline filters right by the carbs as well though I have to say I only had a problem a couple of times in the 5 years I owned the beast!

kind regards

Ah yes I recall it now. Good suggestion re the in line filters.
Whilst we are communicating what is your recommended procedure for cleaning the jets, is is a carb dismantling job or can they be blown through in situ (I do have a compressor)
Thanks again.

Had a day off today (puppy minding until she has her 2nd innoculation) anyway, used the time to take off the carbs and strip them down and clean them. Also, I stripped the distributor and cleaned and lubed that too. Then the good bit, I took it for a test drive.................. Transformation, it's running smoother than ever, straight up to the red 'blob' and, there's no hesitation picking up from low revs, seems to have developed a really nice growl between 4 and 5 thousand revs too.
I need another outing to take it on now.

lol !

It's great to hear you are enjoying my old beast. have to say the '6' is now officially a member of the family. I have noticed as one gets older you tend to fall down the pecking order:
