They seem to have used the same duck tape to make the wonky numbers!

And I take it you've replicated that slight nick in the front spoiler (under the rh sidelight).

Hi Dan, yep been following that one a fantastic build and great thread, complete with a picture of Sam's blue Sunoco car, which
if you look closely you can just make out a very interesting fire extinguisher in the back of

It's amazing how far people will go with the level of detail they put into these car's, I've even heard of using a kiddies plastic
art projector to throw an image to scale artwork onto a door........I mean who would do a thing like that!

I'm pretty sure that's how Ford (and others) got the graphics to 'flow' on their bubble-arched Escorts in the late '60's and early '70's, so that they looked like standard shells from side on.
So almost 50 year old technology.....

In the 60's and 70's the cars were signwritten - painted by hand, freehand. A lost art I think now

Ghostly, almost as if transporting you back to the day,
Tell me you had the faint soundtrack of the actual race playing in the background when you did that.
I know you would have.

Mike

Hi Neil, not quite as easy as that, especially this one with six layers..................
The fonts all wrong on this projection, just using it for scale.

I'm still being a bit slow so you project the image onto the car and then use it to hand paint? Surely if the car or projector moves by mms you are screwed and don't you block the light when trying to painit?

Talking of soundtracks there is some great Sicilian folk music of course, but my favorite is this rare clip of James 23e heure's
playing the penny whistle on his Targa Florio anniversary trip!

It's done to achieve a quick pencil outline, it's a technique I and many others learnt at art college, ideal for sign writing murals, etc. Once the outline is there you pack your projector away.

Nice work Mike 8) If only they'd used that technique when doing this....

Although, when Mr Martini agreed to lend his name to Motorsport I don't 'spose a Trabbie is what sprang to mind

Surely not Neil! To cut a long story short the process involves a highly trained and skilled illustrator who studies the original photos
and draws them out on the computer using specialist software where existing fonts are used, or you can create new ones as we
have done in most cases with this car. The projector was used purely to size the art work for scale. Masks are then created by
computer for each particular layer and colour and printed out using a specialist vinyl cutter.

In the meantime the cars beautiful new paintwork has been flattened down through the lacquer both sides, with the doors coming off
to do the returns and then going back on.

Then the illustrator/artist, the painters and me all get together for the first applications of paint, so we can alter things as we go, it's
a very long, expensive and time consuming process, but as anyone who has seen the bonnet and engine lid know, it's sure worth while!
