I’d kind of come down on wurth and one other (forget the name) but any recommendations gratefully received!

Really getting on with it - right door and rear quarter panle and gaps reworked, lead filled and primed. Rear scuttle at corners all repaired, lead filled and primed, Suspension back in and on its feet again for the first time in a long time. One of the wings needs a little work and there are a couple of other small niggles but still planning to get to the paint shop over the holidays, will need more paint than at first thought, but as usual there is always more work needing done than you see at first - we all know that. But it has to be right - still painting it red/white/blue - resisting the temptation to paint the original colour. Might need to clean the dust off the roof......

At long last and we're off to the paint shop....While the car looks pretty sorry for itself I'm happy that the soon-to-be-hidden work is all done, and done well.

Have made a tough decision this week, as you know the car has been in the paint shop, slow progress as when we started to take back some of the orignal paint we found deep layers of filler and some more rust/holes in the rear right quarter panel, more cutting and welding and lead filling. The options of feathering in the paint work to keep as much patina as possible had vanished....





So advice from the paint shop was to take the original paint back further to ensure that there was no rot and to rework "filler filled" panels back to their original shape. Nearly all of the orginal panels are rust (if not dent) free so getting tham back into shape was worthwhile. So the hard decision was deciding do I keep the white with red/blue stripes or repaint in Silver Metallic - the original special order colour. So much as it pains me, and mainly because we've done so much bodywork on the car and with no way to "blow it back in" - I've decided to repaint in the original colour. Must say I felt/feel dissapointed, but as a realist know that getting the car back to it's original colour is one step closer to the car being "complete" again. So tomorrow the car will be primed ready for paint - pics a plenty to follow, the most recent pics with some more blocking to be done are shown below.

Nooooo! It spent more of its life in the Brumos-style colours than (yawn) silver. Man up and do the right thing! It's not a resto project, or are you putting it 100 per cent back to stock and looking at it as an 'investment'...?

Keith, you've no idea how crap I feel, I just wanted to keep the car as original as possible - i.e. in the Brumos style colours, I was even happy to leave most of the dents, scratches flakey paintwork and probably still do as the very last thing I wanted to do was to paint it silver. The real issue I'm faced with is that no matter what colour I paint the car it will have to be completely repainted, nothing save the roof needed work, nearly all the panels needed either welding or panel work. If I had managed to save the one of two of the panels from being repainted then I'd be faced with the problem of new paint vs old paint - impossible to "blow in". So faced with this choice, and seeing the cost of refurbishent going up from a few thousand to......, well considerably more, I like most, have to spend my money wisely. I simply can't just afford to spend this sort of money without due consideration.

I'm still at a loss as what to do next as so much of the other work I've done in preparation has been sympathetic rather than new-for-old. The jury is still out for deliberation as I consider what next, what I can promise is that the car won't be 100% or even close to stock, both externally or internally. The rational was, and still is, to have a competition car that can be used as Porsche intended. So I kinda need to see the car in fresh paint to take a view on what next. I will promise that it wont be an "investment" restoration.

How about silver then a custom Brumos wrap over the top?

Yes - I've already seen one done like that but not sure I like it. But its not a bad idea. I think that's why I want to see it painted first. Sorry picked you up wrong, not sure a wrap is what I want but seen a silver car with brumos stripes, not sure though....

But Brumos strips would look cool...

Once, the car was silver, became a race car and got those stripes, so why not do the same, take it back to when it was first done.
You could vynal it first on one side to test your heart?

I think you're right. I own and exhibition Company and part or what we do is graphics, so I can play around with ideas and easily output and try them. I've also liked the Carrera Pan American look, and most of that was done on Silver cars albeit in the 50's, I also like the idea of 911 R stripes but do one in blue and the other in red - i.e. Brumos. Keep the ideas coming.......

Graphics are a personal choice esp on your own property, but fwiw I liked those stripes, influenced by USA graphics style of the period.
Bit they were left to the paint shop guy to apply possibly with a simple sketch to go by, old Skool, but good.

Who would want a boring silver 911 anyway

Wraps can be done to a very high standard so could still look good. We’ve had a few cars here wrapped and when done properly it’s really convincing, particularly if it’s white rather than reflective gold or something else horrific!

And yes I did mean a full white wrap with the graphics on top.

Gary - We do wraps as part of our business, not done that many as we concentrate on exhibition graphics, the only issue (other than costs) is that it's not period, yes it may look like a period paint job but its not, I also get that it adds a layer of protection over the new paint for a future owner to enjoy. In theory I could replicate my original Brumos style paint scheme and agree it would look perfect, just might be too modern approach.....? I am pleased to be getting some good ideas - and thanks to all for chirping up.

You could do a patinated Bronson wrap so looks old but easily removed?
I saw some pix of a GT3 with martini livery donevlike this- very convincing!
